Pearly gates in 68' SG?

Hi All!

I'm considering changing the neck pickup in my 68' gibson sg. At the moment it has a classic 57' which has a very smooth sound, but which also has great difficulty cutting through the music when I play solo. It simply seems very 'dark' to me (which actually surprises me since I can see many sg players actually favor them).

I'd like something with a bit more mid-range and I came across someone describing the pearly gates pickups as 'the closest you get to a telecaster sound in a humbucker', which definitely appeal to me. But I also read somebody saying that the PG's were bad for clean sounds, which certainly does not appeal to me. I've tried listening to examples on youtube etc., but it's really difficult for me to evaluate the sound on those clips.

So, are PGs bad for clean sounds? Are they any good in an SG?

Hi there!

I have a PG in the NECK position of my Burny SG and dude, it is an amazing sounding pickup. Clean aswell. It's very easy to get really neat jazzy tones with it, and if you turn up the tone a little bit more past 6 or 7 it sounds like a perfect clean tone to me. I know it may not help, but the Seymour Duncan website nailed it when they said that it is "Sweet, but slightly rude".

And it sounds fantastic aswell when overdriven. I use it way more than I use the bridge position (which on this guitar is just a (still great sounding) stock bridge pickup). I could only imagine that the bridge PG sounds better!

Personally, I'm very happy with the pickup man. Not taking it out of the Burny ever! :-)

I hope this helped you.

Ryan.
