Teer Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 well i finally got my new j-185, all i can say it's beautiful! quilted maple back & sides, adirondack spruce front. protective film is still on pick guard but i do have a question for you gibby professionals...the pick guard covers up the bottom rosette, should i leave it or should i pry it off and recut the edge where it covers the rosette? thanks guys! teer
BigKahune Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 . Lordy, lordy . . . . . that's a gorgeous 185. Lovely top. The pickguard - I don't mind the placement over the rosette and never considered moving/recutting one. However, I've seen a few members here make changes, swap for a different guard, and removed and left bare. Make it yours and set the guard the why you like it. Congrats on yer new beauty. . B)
bobouz Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 It's certainly a matter of personal preference. Having the rosette covered so much by the pickguard has always bugged me a lot. Never have acted on the desire to do something about it with previously owned instruments. Thankfully, my J100xtra does not cover the abalone inlay rosette, but I'd still rather see the full ring rosette on my J45. Regardless, you've got a beautiful guitar there!

A lot of the originals had the rosette uncovered, or at least the inner ring, like this gorgeous '55: Gibson has a habit of inconsistency in terms of these sorts of details; some things aren't worth getting lathered up over, but some things are pretty important to some folks. The "nude rosette" is one that usually elicits the whole range of responses. Fred
Red 333 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Gorgeous! The pickguard seems to cover most if not all of the rosette on a modern-day Gibson acoustic (most of the time). It's certainly a matter of personal preference, but there's nothing particularly off with the way it is now. Congrats again on such a great looking new guitar. Hope it sounds and plays as good as it looks (and am confident it does). Red 333
EuroAussie Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 That is one of the most beautiful J-185's I have ever seen - congratulations ! All my Gibson have their bottom edge of rosette covered with the pickguard, no issue, has never bothered me.
Jerry K Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I played a blonde one at Music Villa recently. I went back to play it a few times and nearly bought it. It's quite a bit lighter than my Modern Classic 185 and this one sounded very different from mine. Killer quilted maple on the back and sides.
J-200 Koa Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Don't cut the pickguard. It looks great just like it is.
Teer Posted November 20, 2011 Author Posted November 20, 2011 Thanks for the responses! I'm gonna leave it as it is for the time being, it dosen't really bother me(not a lover of fiddlin' with my guitars). That '55 sure is nice! On another note, the guitar is very easy to play, sounds superb, and I gotta say it is very, very light in weight! I love it! If you were to say to me a year ago I would have three Gibbys I would of said you were full of sh*t! But alas, I now have a LP, Nighthawk 2010 and now a gorgeous J-185! 2011 is the year of guitars for me! Stable keeps growing and growing. Have to compare the 185 to my new Martin HD-28(which is at the Bro's getting a LR Baggs p/u installed) Cheers!
