CR9
I've got a '76 les paul custom i bought in '94 that's definately an original and genuine but has black pickup cavities, has it been refinished? Or is there another reason? Depends on what the top color is now. If it is not black, then it could have been refinished. The overspray from the top is usually the color inside the cavities. There was a point when people painted the cavities with a special black paint that was an insulating type of paint to reduce electrical interference and that could also be the reason. Photos of it would help.
