Well, I'll show my age... Your computer speakers may make a diff on this too, but...

for clean... gotta be somebody like Joe Pass.

For "dirty?" It's gotta be the original, the guy whose simple instrumental was banned from a batch of radio stations. This ain't the first recorded version, that was in the '50s! But... it's still a lotta fun. I still have my mid '50s bike jacket... that I'd only wear pickin' a guitar meant for dirt like this one...

Well, for me, there are so many, and too...there's "clean," then there's "overdrive clean."

Clean...Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, etc.

Overdriven Clean...Mike Bloomfield, Peter Green, BB King, EC, Dickie Betts, Ritchie Blackmore, etc...

Overdriven...Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, EC (again), SRV, etc.

(That's about as "dirty" tone wise, as I really tend to like.)

Some of your posts are a good reminder why you get suspended on a monthly basis..........Perhaps it's time again.........

Dirty - Santana, Brian May, Randy Rhoads, SRV

clean - Hendrix, SRV, John Fruschiante, Mark Knoppler, Eric Johnson

I would also like to add Steve Morse to both categries. That guy is a master of tone.
