Guys...

Do Rosewood fretboards get dark to the point of almost looking like ebony?

You know, over the years with the cleaning and oils from our hands?

Im asking, because I was watching Letterman. The female guitar player is playing a white Strat with what appears to be an ebony fretboard....I like the dark look.

If you don't clean the fretboard, it will darken over time. I don't think I cleaned mine for 15 years. It was VERY dark.

For the record, cleaning it restored much of the original sustain and tone. I, quite foolishly, believed cleaning it would ruin "my tone"... [-X

I have a '61 Melody Maker double cut twin pickup I've owned (pretty much, not counting a son having it for years) for 38 years.

And a new '07 ES-339.

The Melody Maker is darker.

And Scalloped. Oh yea, I did that learning how to play...................

Mucho mojo, but it's not a lot darker. Body oils, Fingerease, and a dab of Murphys Oil Soap when I got it back. It's never even smelled lemon oil.

Best of luck.

Murph.

I can tell you from experience that an ebony fretboard is my favorite. My Taylor acoustic has one and it is my favorite fretboard over my Rosewood fretboard Gibson acoustic, Rosewood fretboard Legato acoustic and Maple fretboard on my 1980's Phantom Strat copy. Ebony is the smoothest and hardest feeling.

You're kidding right? Ever seen SRVs Number 1?

I hate to be a fly in the ointment but SRV's number 1 didnt have an ebony fretboard.

I believe it was rosewood. The reissues use Pao Ferro...which is a lighter colour.

My mistake. I for some reason read "rosewood" when R9 in fact wrote "ebony". That's why I thought he was joking.

I have seen some light colored rosewood and actually liked it. The picture Gibson used to publish for the Desert Burst Studio Plus like mine, showed a really light fretboard. If I could have found one like that, I would have probably chosen it.

I have an SRV strat with Brazilian rosewood and it is darker than most if not all other rosewoods and the grain is tighter. The newer SRV's with the Pao Ferro is no where near as dark, or tight grained and that's how to tell the difference between the two. Brazilian still is not as dense, with as tight of grain as ebony - pretty close, but just shy of that dark color and dense grain.
