el guapo Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I have had my Gibson ES-135 with p100s since the late 90s. I have been wanting to get some p-90 pickups for it forever and I may go with lollar or fralin pickups. Anyways, my es-135 has soapbar p-100s and I was wondering if I had to use soapbar p-90s or if I could put dog ear pickups on it. I actually prefer the look of the dog ears (Grant Green's es-330 and Marc Ribot's es-225 come to mind) but I am curious if there is a benefit to those rather than the soapbar. Perhaps proximity to the strings. I don't know. I guess I just want the dog ears but don't want to be stupid about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! First Post
truthoffiction Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 You'd have to mod your guitar and diminish it's value to install dog ears. Non DE pups will mount perfectly with no mods. They sound the same.
JellyWheat Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 +1 truthoffiction. The soap bars give you some rudimentary height adjustment, which can really enhance P-90 sound. Getting dog ears installed right can be tricky because of the weird, as symmetrical top profile of 135/137s. Good luck J/W
