Electronic tuner

Yes, I am of the age group that tuned guitars with a tuning fork! Ha!

I was in a music shop around 1980 and bought a 'Standard Fender Stratocaster' and while I was tooling around and drooling and stuff, the ever practical 'Better Half' sitting unusually patiently waiting says, 'Why don't you have one of these Electronic Tuners?'. Gasp! Never knew they existed, that's why. Came home with the Strat and a Boss TU-12 tuner. Haven't touched the low-end Strat since about 1981 - still in a cupboard, but I have used the tuner practically every day since!

The cover is held together with Gaffa tape, and until recently it has been very accurate, but unfortunately the internal wiring has started to fall apart,

So,

Since I have the 12 string Gibson acoustic, I would like to get another accurate tuner.

What does everyone else here use?

Snark looks like a great Christmas present for us poor folk. Something that could get good use on the coffee table. A gift with love.

I have a couple stage/pedal tuners, but I also use the TU-12 for tuning and setups at home. Great tuner, and stage tuners don't really get the accuracy in reading the TU-12 does.

If mine went belly up, I think I would go shopping to check out some of the newer strobe-like tuners they have out now.

Snark easily wins. I have a Peterson strobe and never use it. I bought four black Snarks from Musiciansfriend.com when they were on sale, dirt cheap. Keep one here, one there.

Still have my "A" tuning fork, although I haven't used it for years. Since I don't gig these days, I just use my little Korg CA-20 in the home studio, but I can see the advantage of the Snark for playing out. In a band, we just tuned to the keyboard and let her rip.

+10

+100 I am really impressed on how easy and precise this little tuner ( I have the black one)is. I'm going to order a second one, just in case [thumbup]

The free Gibson app for iPhone Android etc is very good and has a tuner, a metronome, a collection of video lessons and a chord dictionary. I don't use the tuner much as I tune by ear; but the metronome has been invaluable for practicing!

For in-line stuff I use a Boss TU-2 ... but mostly I use an intellitouch PT10 clip on .. similar to the snark. These clip ons are great for tuning with others playing and tuning at the same time. Turners made my playing experience much better when I discovered them (I am far from having perfect pitch) for no other reason than it saved time. They all seem pretty accurate to me.

I have a dozen or more tuners, (and a couple of tuning forks).

I don't much like the electronic ones.

I had an old Seiko quartz tuner, and I really liked it....so I went on ebay and bought maybe another half dozen of 'em used....so I have them all over the place now.

(I like the clip on tuner for tuning my pianos).

I tuned with a tuning fork for YEARS and was over-joyed to find electronic tuners! I have one of the TU-12's somewhere as well as probably 4 others that haven't been used in a LONG time.

I learned of the Snark here, checked 'em out by buying one then bought 4 for me and 10 for friends.

If you get them through Amazon they're like..$13 (the red ones) Love 'em! If you want to stick to the TU, pm me. Be happy to send it to you!

It appears the Snark is a winner so far. I will get a few - Xmas coming up.

Can you tune a guitar in a band with these? (PA belting filler music, drunks drunking, talkers screaming, drummer going dank, dank, danker-de-dank-plunk)

I used to tune by sight in a dark hole in the stage with the Boss TU-12, because I sure couldn't hear the guitar.

I know the above noise conditions don't apply at home, except for when relatives visit, but you know, old habits and all that....

I thought someone might have a new, super up-date version of the Boss TU-12?

P.S.

I just looked up the Boss website and while they are still making the TU-12 (can you believe it?), the below pictured model is the TU-1000!!!!

I have a Boss TU15 (the successor to the TU12) which is pretty decent, a good needle tuner (just remember to recalibrate it if you drop it-simple to do, but you'll be sharp or flat all over if you don't!).

I don't use the TU15 a lot, though-I have a couple of clip-ons for around the house (an early Intellitouch and an Ezetune, the latter being excellent in particular), a Peterson Strobostomp 2 in my studio and a Peterson Strobe Classic on my pedalboard.

I swear by the Petersons. I've used them for years, and they are just great-built like a house, the second most accurate tuner out there (behind the Turbo Tuner, which isn't as well built and doesn't feature a built-in DI) and the aforementioned DI is great, particularly in the latest model, the Strobe Classic.

I am so impressed with the DI in the SC that I will use only that when playing live. It gets a lot of abuse, my pedal chain is Analogman Tremelo>MXR Carbon Copy Delay>Boss OS2>EHX Mole>Boss RC30 Loopstation>Peterson Strobe Classic, so it gets a wildly varying array of signals to sort out and send in an orderly and aurally pleasant way to the PA, which it copes with admirably.

The Stoboflip is a great Peterson case tuner too. I don't own one but plan to in due course. Also, if you own an electric guit or bass, strobe tuners will allow you to intonate a guitar DEAD ON, no messing about. I set up and intonated a pal's electric bass last week, and it went from sounding like a wooly mess to sounding like molten honey...intonation is so important.

Yeap!, Snarks are clip-on tuners so all the noise around won't be a problem [biggrin]

Well, I looked up the Peterson website at the tuners mentioned. I looked at the Peterson Strobe Tuner and others in their line. Look nice. Read the gaff - oh oh - no comprende.

My guitar tech/luthier (must ask him what he likes to be known as) has a Peterson Strobe Tuner vintage approx 1960 I would say. I watched him tune my guitar last time with it and frankly didn't know what he was looking at, then assumed the Peterson Strobe Tuner is only for special people!

But no, Jinder claims they are available for common guitar players!

I know I used the Boss TU-12 for years and never understood, or cared, how it worked. It just did....

But I am a bit confused about Strobscoping. How does this work? Will the whole room flash and shake like a 60's experience? Do I need to close my eyes? Just kidding, but it would be good if a more technically oriented person could explain how these work (and the Snark while we are at it) then even the TU-12???

Have had ....and still have the standard, plugin or play to the mic type tuners. I have, over the past couple of years become a 'convert' to the peghead tuners like the Snark. I find them very convenient and accurate for acoustic as well as my electrics. I try to keep a couple around on each floor of the house, as well as one for in a guitar case when traveling.

maybe its because i'm in ireland, but i never heard of a snark in my life , going to check them out cos its not very often something gets such praise .

i was going to post that after 4or 5 years of about 10 different clip on tuners i got the intellitouch one and that seems to me to be the best one out there . is quite expensive though, but built like a tank

Yeah, and as suggested in another thread here, the clip ons are great to have when trying out guitars either at your local git store or at the crossroads. Don't leave home without it!

If you have either an iphone or an itouch Guitar Toolkit is a must have. Tuner ( 55 for guitar ) metronome, chords, scales its the most used app on my iphone by far.
