Jack Middleton
Hello all, what are the differences between these two? There's a £50 price difference and I can live with a faded finish for the sake of £50, are there any differences in spec other than colour finish? Thanks. LSAR
The only difference is the satin finish, and the different finishes/colours. Older faded/vintage models also have fretboard binding.
EpiphoneFan1989
I must say, that I like the faded g-400 more than the normal g-400. It looks very nice and has a great retro style. I hope, I can get it soon...

I really like mine though I decided to shine it up and it looks even better now IMO. I removed all the hardware and got after it with some automotive scratch remover and then a few treatments of high shine auto wax... still not as shiny as regular G400 but much more so than the original worn finish...very vintage looking now. Anyhow, it's a great guitar for the price.

Jack Middleton
Thanks very much, I'll go for the faded Cherry then, I do prefer the worn look if I'm honest, the glossy finish just looks too perfect for my liking, I intend to swap the bridge pick up for a Gibson Iommi humbucker too, only another few weeks until I buy one, I can't wait. Barcham
I really love my vintage faded G-400 with the neck binding but the latest faded models I was looking at on Sunday were really not in the same ballpark. It seems they have really gone down in quality in the latest version. If you can, try to find an older one, I would say 2010 at the latest. The 2011 model I had in my hands was simply terrible. The finish was more like vinyl than veneer and it looked nothing at all like the ones you see advertised on the web.

Perhaps the newer 2011 Faded G-400's differ in quality depending on where you buy one or the day on which they were built? Or, something? After thinking about it I'm not sure I have even seen a 2011 Faded. I can only remember 2010 serials. When you say the finish was "more like vinyl" do you mean feel or looks. Was the neck finish the same?My friend is thinking about picking up a faded like mine, but I don't want to steer him toward disappointment. I can't visit the store with him, so he is on his own there. My sister-in-law has a Vintage with the worn brown finish. It is a beautiful guitar. It inspired me to pick up my Faded G-400 with the worn brown finish (2010 model). Other than cosmetics like her white binding (which I initially preferred but have since decided is less attractive than the brown binding) the two guitars are of equal build quality. I was quite surprised how well it was finished. I love the finish on the neck. So fast. No palm sticking at all. The Vintage G-400s will probably end up being pretty rare compared to the Faded G-400s and so they might be more collectible. I know some people are into that angle. But, I've now played Vintage and Faded G-400s, in several stores, here (in Germany). In fact in Munich this past summer I was able to play a Vintage and a Faded (2010 serial number) side-by-side. Same amp. No modeling. Same feel same tone. I think if a guitar appeals to you visually, or has a certain vibe that inspires you, that this enhances how you approach that instrument and your perception of its tone. As I noted above, I'm not sure if I've actually played a 2011. I felt the need to defend my Faded I guess. Haha. We all have our weaknesses. Barcham
The new models are a completely different shade of colour. Very light in shade, nothing like the usual faded or vintage colours. It's very easy to tell the difference. They are almost chalky in appearance. I will head down to the shop on the weekend, I need to pick up some strap locks anyways, and I'll take a few pics with my cell phone and post them here. They have both a faded brown and faded cherry in stock so I'll take shots of both of them if I can. I have seen the original faded and yes, the neck is very much like the one on my vintage. Very smooth and fast. The main difference between the faded and my vintage is the faded has veneer and the vintage does not. Not sure if the faded has a one piece neck but even if it doesn't, it's still a great neck. But if your friend has seen your guitar, he will see the difference if the one in the shop is the new style that I saw. The colour is nowhere near the same. It's totally washed out and the feel of the guitar just doesn't compare at all. I cannot see anyone who has played a vintage or faded deciding to buy one of the ones I saw. Jack Middleton
Thanks for the replys everyone, I tested out the glossy version today, one niggle I have is whenever I play my hands get a little sweaty so with a gloss finish the friction between the neck and my hands increase making it harder to play, does the Faded G400 have a satin or gloss finish on the neck? they didn't have one to show me so I'm unsure. LSAR
Should be satin all over on the faded.
