New Epi LP JR, but missing a part

Hi,

Recently got the guitar, but one of the adjustment screws for the bridge is missing, (the small black one, not the big chrome one). I sent in my registration card, but it seems silly to make a warranty claim over this. Anyone know what size screw I need to buy ?

Thanks,

Can you post a picture of which one? The intonation screw?

If so, you'll either have to salvage from another bridge, perhaps talk local

git shop out of one, OR just simply order antother Bridge from GUITARFETISH -

I've ordered MANY, always been satisfied.

If it is indeed intonation screw, I fear that those are going to be OEM, and finding

one for purchase will be difficult.

GuitarFetish sells them for $12.95. An advantage is that GF Bridges are 9/16" from front

to back, where EPI Stock Bridges are 7/16" from front-to-back. The GF bridges have just a wee

bit more Intonation adjustment room.

I dont know, AF. They look like regular machine screws to me. I'd take one to a hardware stor and see if he can find a match. If not, online from a guiatr parts site would be they way to go, as you suggested.

Yeah, having a PIC would be beneficial. Or even a link to a PIC from an online

source....

I have two of these bridges at home. I'm pretty sure they are just machine screws. If the OP doesnt post a pic by this evening, I will sometime tonight.

Thanks for the replies. I took a photo, but am not clear how to insert it into the msg. The insert image button seems to want an http URL. I'm not running a web server, so no use. I'll be contacting Epiphone for warranty support. They can send me a new screw.

These bolts can be found at any good harware store (Sears usually has a good selection). It may be tough to find allen-head versions in the right size, but Phillips head bolts will work just as well.

Hi brian,

Yep that's the screw I'm missing, also the Allen wrench to adjust it. I contacted the online retailer I bought the guitar from, and they said I should send it back and get a replacement. Freight paid by them in both directions, which seems fair to me, but rather overkill. Other than the missing screw and wrench, the guitar is quite nice, so I ordered a replacement bridge with screws and wrench, from Guitar Fetish. Twenty bucks, including freight.

Nice P90 pickup on your rig, am considering a GFS Mean 90 to replace the stock humbucker, but first I want to play it stock for a while.

JB, that's an older bolt-neck Junior that I modified heavily. The older ones came with really crappy P90s that weren't even full sized. Anyway, here's a link to the mod thread:

Hi Brian,

Nice thread on the reworking, thanks for that. I've been playing my new epi lp jr., through my new vox ac4tv mini and it sounds good. Haven't played in 20 years, so am a bit rusty :)

The epi is nice, and will be nicer once I get the bridge situation sorted. The vox is a nice little tube practice amp. Nice clean tone, and over drives well. The amp reminds me of the ca. 1980 Fender champ I had, back in the day. Tone is different, but then that is to be expected.

Definitely change out the stock humbucker with a P-90. Mine has a Dream 90 and it's a different guitar, tone-wise. Change the nut and tuners as well (I've done the former; soon to do the later).

Epi Juniors are very nice guitars for the price, and fun to mod. Good luck with yours!

Hi Swamp,

I'm going to use the jr. stock for a bit, but yeah, the upgrades you suggest are on my mind.

You've got a Dream 90 pickup, so I assume you like the stuff from GFS ?

Any recommends you might have for replacement tuners or nuts, greatly appreciated.

As to the PUP, I'm inclined more towards the Mean 90, but if you have any comments Dream 90 vs. Mean 90, would like to hear from you.

Thanks,

Sorry to barge in, but the GFS tuners are an excellent value for the money, even better than their pickups IMHO. Here are the ones I used on another Jr. build: http://www.guitarfetish.com/3x3-Keystone-Green-Key-Vintage-Style-Tuners-Nickel_p_36.html

I have heard on this forum that GFS Mean 90's are better than Dream 90's.

Here's that other build thread: http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/56623-speaking-of-juniors-upgrades-complete/page__p__762495__hl__%2Bred+%2Bjunior__fromsearch__1&do=findComment&comment=762495

Brian,

Are those the ones that are a direct replacement for tuners with 8mm holes?

(The subject seems to come up here quite often.)

Willy

I think I had to use the reamer on those, can't remember.

Hi Brian or Willy,

Will probably end up replacing the stock tuners on my Jr., are there good drop in replacements, or will I need to do some real work ?

Jbarntt,

Hoping Brian chimes in on this one as he has much more experience with different varieties of tuners than I do.

If he does not revisit this thread, send him a note via your messenger. He is very helpful.

Almost all my replacements are Grovers which require 10mm holes.

What I can do is give you a few insights.

Your stock tuner shafts are 5.99mm. They go through the stock bushings which have an inside opening of 6.5mm to 7mm. The outside of the bushings require an 8mm hole. Keep in mind the stock bushings are made of relatively thin metal. That said...

Regarding GFS Vintage replacements:

Most of the vintage style replacements say they require an 9mm hole for their bushings. Again, remember that those bushings are a little thicker.

Many also state that they are direct replacements for Kluson tuners.

Kluson Vintage tuner shafts are 6.35mm.

There is a good chance that you could use the stock bushings...BUT... Do not take my word for it. That is something I would want to hear from Brian or someone that has actually used them!

As to replacements in general:

I just got done replacing tuners on a Jr. with some Grovers. (require 10mm holes)

There are also some excellent comments in the thread after the install:

One last tip. The screw holes are not likely to line up with the originals. If you are adding screw holes near the originals you can fill them with a tooth pick dipped in Elmer's glue. Put the tooth pick in the hole, mark with a pencil and pre-cut to size.

If the old holes will show but are of no consequence they can be filled with matching color crayon shavings. Rub the wax into the old holes with your finger and then polish over the top. It's not perfect but it is easier than refinishing the back of the headstock!

Good luck,

Willy

When I put Gibson Deluxe tuners on my (daughter's) Junior, The old bushings fit perfectly, but I didnt use them. I did find it odd that the old el-cheapo bushings fit perfectly over the Gibby Deluxe shafts.
