saturn Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 My God....USPS First Class Mail has become unbelievably slow! It is now taking WEEKS for letters to reach their destinations, where in the past it would take 3-5 days tops. Hell, sending it within state used to sometimes arrive next day. Sometimes our mail doesn't come to our house until after 7pm, that is if it comes at all on some days. I know they are having problems, but come on. I wonder if anyone in the private sector could take over the duties of daily letter delivery?
L5Larry Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 USPS in St. Louis, and serviced suburbs, is still doing a fine job. Next day delivery in-state, and most surrounding areas. Although they did deliver me an empty box a few weeks ago. The letter carrier came to the door very embarrassed and said "you're not going to believe this", and then handed me an empty box and the local Postmaster's phone number. Although the freight was lost within the USPS system, the shipper seemed to think that 6" of cellophane tape was enough to hold 100' of heavy duty speaker cable in an end-load box. A few days later a replacement shipment was received (with extra tape used). Happy ending and a couple of good laughs in between. I also do Netflix. Say I put the return DVD in my mailbox on Monday, next DVD received on Wednesday.
pippy Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Oddly enough on Wednesday I was working with a client here in the UK who ships stuff to the U.S.A. and he was stunned to find that things which usually took a few days to arrive were taking between 2 - 3 weeks. I'm glad it isn't just his stuff that's targeted! LOL! P.
bluzhammer Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Anything slower would STOP. They are victims of their on undoing. When you reward inefficiency with union guarantees of little to no consequences for your slothfulness , it is a recipe for disaster.
charlie brown Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Isn't the USPS broke or something? Well, like the rest of the "Government," they're way past "Broke," into a severe deficit existence. Even so, I've not experience any real difference (Here), in mail service, except in pricing. But delivery speed/times, seem to be "as usual." For now, anyway. CB
zigzag Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 The United States Postal Service is socialistic and must be banned immediately. Don't know why, but it's funnier when you say it...
Dub-T-123 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I'm getting pretty fed up with USPS. The last two packages I got delivered by them arrived all smashed up with gaping holes and everything AND they were completely late. They didn't even put the "possibly damaged" or whatever sticker on one of the clearly smashed boxes. I paid $19 for the shipping on one of them and it was a small package and they smashed it and took like twice as long to ship it as what I paid for. They've always been awesome in the past. At least in my experience, but lately it has been really terrible.

The last (major/large) USPS package I got, was from Japan, via their mail service, then...via USPS. It was not only Not damaged, but the guitar inside, was still in tune! (My MIJ '61 SG Standard) I was (frankly) astounded! But, even later, and much smaller packages have arrived in great condition. I wonder, if your troubles are with that particular post office, personnel, worn out machinery, etc.??? CB
tazzboy Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 It always happen this time of the year cause of the Holidays and the Weather.

I think tazzboy is right. It's probably just the season. I've never had problems like this in the past they're probably just swamped so they're taking less care with the packages. None of my stuff was damaged but if it wasn't packed so well it would have been.

I Love that "Empty Box" delivery story, of L5 Larry's, too! Hilarious! CB
EVOL! Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Isn't the USPS broke or something? They really aren't. That is big misnomer when you dig into the facts. Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 forces the USPS to pre-fund healthcare benefits of future retirees. That's a 75 year liability over a 10 year period that costs the USPS $5.5 billion a year. No other agency or corporation is required to do this.
Sinner 13 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 that and I believe they are cutting Sat. service as well? I thought I heard something to that effect. I get consistent service here, I get my GFS orders almost next day, but they are in state as well. 90% of the time they get priority mail to me in a 3 to 5 day window.
tazzboy Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 I believe they say they are going broke just get people to uses USPS
EVOL! Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 One thing to know about USPS too is that they are the only ones who service the back woods, rural areas of this country. If you live in BFE and have something shipped by UPS*, chances are it will be delivered by USPS. *united pot smokers <tee-hee>
Silenced Fred Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 i've never had a problem with usps, cheapest way to ship stuff IMO and i always spend the extra dollar for tracking, put that jawn in the usps app on my iPhone? boom, i know when they get that DAT SHYT CRAY SON DAT SHYT CRAY
saturn Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 See, I knew something was up... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/04/us-postal-service-faces-b_n_1127989.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl1%7Csec1_lnk1%7C117647
heymisterk Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 My USPS Experiences: Good: -No slow down, and I still do a lot by mail. Netflix turn-around is one day. -My mail carrier is friendly and kind. I tip her well this time of year. -In general, you are not going to find a cheaper way to send an envelope. Bad: -AWFUL lines when you actually have to send a package. In general, I am satisfied. I think the USPS gets an overly bad rap.
Californiaman Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I'm cool with it. I do think, however, that the bad rep is based on it's inability to opperate in the black year after year. In my opionion this should not be. But it's bad rep is deservidly so.

In my opionion this should not be. But it's bad rep is deservidly so. You do understand that their budget shortfall is only because of the silly requirement that they pre-fund healthcare benefits for future retires? Please also note that no other agency or corporation is required to do this. If it wasn't for the pre-fund mandate the USPS would run in the black.
Daryl M Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I don't actually mail much, but I do send a letter once a week to Colorado. Twice over the past 2 months the letter has not made it there. And this is with the address printed, not handwritten, onto the envelope. I'm not sure who/what is the issue, but it's frustrating.
