bluesguitar65 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 This was the topic at work today. A co-office worker on the way to work yesterday hit a tree branch on the freeway. The tree branch fell onto the lane he was traveling on, due to high winds, and he tried to avoid the tree but hit the front right passenger side causing about $2500 of damage. The frame was bent and the radiator and engine also damaged due to over heating. No other vehicles involved and he was not hurt. Only damage was on his car. After the inpact, he did not realize how bad the damage was and continued drving until the thermostat temp went high and the car dead on the freeway about 10 miles later. Does he need to report this to the police? This is in California,

Does he need to report this to the police? Must be in California? You do in order to get insurance to cover it.
bluesguitar65 Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Must be in California? You do in order to get insurance to cover it. The car is 20 years old and he only has liability insurance on it. Nor worth the full coverage as the blue book value of the is only about $800. Its a Honda CRX Si, 91 model. So all expense on repairing the car would be out of his pocket. Would you still need to call the insurance of this accident as well, eventhough they will not cover it?
bluesguitar65 Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Since there was no property damage done to others, he had no requirement to report it. This is so in California or throughout the state?
Tman Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Since there was no property damage done to others, he had no requirement to report it. California insurers require a police report for a comp claim???!!! So, if you dent the car on the garage door frame when parking, you have to call the police??? You know I had an experience where I tried to get my car fixed after an act of nature occurrence and my insurance company required a police report so I made the grand assumption that it was. We all know what happens when one assumes - it makes an a$$ out of u and me so I respectfully retract my advice Carry on.

I told him to call his insurance regardless if he only had liability. The insurance will hopefully give him some sound advice on what to do, and I think your "***" was covered by reporting to the insurance immediately.

Not call the police, but make a police report if the damage was over $750 regardless if the property was yours or not.
Tman Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Did your insurance company refuse to cover the claim? Yes they covered it but I just went right ahead and filed a police report. Didn't even think to ask - was just in a sheep mode I suppose.
