Opinions on the original Gospel line (not the '90s reissues)

I had a tangle with a couple of very nice original Gospels when I went to buy my AJ. One was a '72 and the other a '77.

The '77 was nice, but the '72 was remarkable. Just a big ol' bowl of tone. Quite the oft-quoted "piano like" bottom end and sweet, smokey highs.

Has anyone else played one of these? I know the RI series from the '90s are well regarded, but I know very little about the originals.

Yes I had a 1980 model....built in 79 so I was told. Very nice guitar. I bought mine from Frailers in Runcorn in 1988.

Mine had a very unusual feature, in that the back, sides, and neck were stained very dark brown almost black.

I have never seen this in any other original Gospel. When I came to trade it a few years later, Rick Harrison

of Music Ground thought it had been refinished in order to hide damage. If it was, they did a good job.

I wonder were it is now?
