Oscar sweden 0
Hi, I just bought a guitar today, I have been looking for a vintage guitar for a long time for a reasonable price and there it was, a guy who sold a Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty with MAPLE neck in MINT condition from 1977 for only 15900sek approx 2300 dollars , I called him and said I wanted to try it out to day and buy it. I tried i out it felt like a gibson and i baught it HOW EVER now 10 hours later I check the serial Numbers, 211295 "made in USA" but there are only 6 digital numbers!!!! there should be eight right???? som my question is did i buy a copy or real stuff????? sellen
hope it's the real deal man. Don't know enough about les paul's to say if it's a fake or not, and the pick's was a bit unclear. I found this quot in the text with the subject "gibson serial systm" I does not mention Les Paul there, but there might be hope However, it has come to light recently that the Kalamazoo plant did not directly switch over to the “new” 8 digit serialization method in 1977. When the Nashville Gibson plant was opened in 1974, it was decided that the bulk of the production of products would be run in the South; the Kalamazoo plant would produce the higher end (fancier) models in the North. Of course, many of the older guitar builders and craftsmen were still in Kalamazoo; and if they weren't ready to change how they built guitars, then they may not have been ready to change how they numbered them! Certain guitar models built in the late 1970s can be used to demonstrate the old-style 6 digit serial numbers. It is estimated that Gibson's Kalamazoo plant continued to use the 6 digit serial numbers through 1978 and 1979. So double check the serial numbers on those 1970s L-5s, Super 400s, and Super 5 BJBs! Edit: That fingerboard and the hardware looks quit fresh to be a 1977 model
BigKahune
. I've got a couple of concerns: That's in unbelievably good shape for a 1977 - the binding is still white and the gold hardware is in perfect shape. It looks brand new and to me that's a concern. Also, I'm concerned about that maple fretboard on a LP Custom - most are ebony. I'm sure more members will comment on it.

I believe they had customs with maple necks in the seventies - I know deluxes of that time had them. If it is a fake, they did a good job giving it all the seventies quips. I know they make maple neck Customs today.
Oscar sweden 0
the guitar is in nice shape but its worn, there are a lot of scratches on the back (not to the wood). One more thing is that it says Gibson on the tuners. and its Heavy!
mosquito3
She looks genuine to me. Like said above, In 70's some Les Paul Custon came with maple fretboard. Could you upload a picture of the headstock?

Yes - necks, not so many fretboards ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/280790531545?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 ). But I agree that it does look good so I'm only pointing out concerns. Now, with more pics I see a plastic jack plate - another concern for me. Maybe someone with pot code knowledge can chime in on the pot numbers. So far Oscar, no comments on it being fake - so far so good.

SG Jones
Looks 100% genuine to me. I can't see a single thing that would suggest otherwise. I played a couple of maple board customs when they were new. Nice guitars. That is the first black beauty I've seen. Looks great!!!

BigKahune
. Thanks for the effort in post additional pics. It sure does look good - a very clean 70s LPC. Regarding the concerns I commented on previously: Looking around at some pics I've have seen another with a plastic jack plate so that concern of mine is gone. I'm still concerned about the binding still looking white and the light wear. Additionally the placement of the 6 digit serial number stamp has me a bit concerned too - it appears to be between the D and G machines instead of above them - unusual. In the pic I can see a "2" and a couple other impressions next to the G machine. The second pic below is of another 1977 LPC with an 8 digit serial above the tuners. Here's a 1977 LPC with an 8 digit serial above the tuners - the tuners, volute, etc, look the same.
