gypsyseven
Right now i'm using a Maxon OD-808 and really love this pedal, but i thought maybe there's something else.... I play rhythm in a rock/alternative band and want to keep my AC30 set clean and use the pedal as my "OD channel"... I use mostly my '61 Casino or my '52 HotRod Tele or CP Jazzmaster... What do you use/like ?
RaSTuS
One I recommend in a heartbeat is the Crowther Hotcake, it's an awesome pedal that has a tremendous amount of control over the overdrive produced, never heard a bad word against them. RaSTuS
Yeah, that was my 1st thought too, but i guess there's something else...or should i just get one... I have a Double Hotcake, basically two of them ganged together, I set it up that one isn't that hot and the other a bit hotter again, then you can use them separately or both at once to get a very over-driven sound, it affords great flexibility, I'd recommend one in a heartbeat. damian
Those Crowther pedals do look nice....And they state they're designed for your stated use......For other options to consider might be; Visual Sound's "Jeckl and Hyde" pedal........Plimsoul and OCD pedals.......And the Carl Martin "PlexiTone" pedal..... I haven't played the Carl Martin pedal, but, I know it's a monster......Oh, and your band sounds really great.......
RaSTuS
Oh, and your band sounds really great....... +1Just had a listen, double thumbs up. BTW: The Crowther pedals used to be produced on his kitchen table by Paul Crowther in NZ, I'm not sure if this is still the case though. Found this snippet on www.guitar.com.au HOTCAKE OVERDRIVE PEDAL - Crowther Audio Noel Gallagher of Oasis swears by it. So do Pavement, The Melvins, Sonic Youth, along with the likes of local luminaries Chris Knox, Neil Finn, and Dave Mitchell of the 3Ds. So, what is it, exactly? It's the Hotcake. What? It's a mighty crunchy, home grown distortion effects pedal that guitarists the world over swear by. And they are as rare as hens teeth. The hand-made HOTCAKE is considered by many to deliver the ultimate distortion sound. Hand-made in NZ by Paul Crowther (the original drummer from Split Enz) it only has 3 knobs (Gain, Level and Presence) but that's all it needs. The Hotcake is designed to leave the undistorted component of the guitar sound unchanged, while providing a nice fat distortion sound without resorting to a treble cut circuit which will also affect the guitar tonality. With the Drive and Presence controls set to minimum, and the Level at around 2 o'clock, you should be hard pressed to hear any change in the sound at all when you switch the Hotcake in and out. You can get a clean volume boost by increasing the Level control. Increasing the Drive will give you a thick distortion sound with a little bit of edge to it, and the Presence control adds some mid-range punch to the sounds. The Hotcake also handles chords well. It is recommended that the Hotcake is patched between the guitar and amplifier, rather than into an amplifier's effect loop. Generally speaking, if you are happy with your guitar and amplifier combination, the Hotcake will work well as a primary distortion. It works superbly to send an already overdriven amp over the edge into smooth distortion;ideal with non-master volume valve amps.
Stevie Nazarenie
i like the marshall bluesbreaker 2. it has a clean boost and vintage overdrive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBQbPpUqvYo although i like the jackhammer too! you can turn the gain down and it has both overdrive and distortion modes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN1GkqSyeMs
ajzwart
I use the Fulltone OCD through a AC15, and it sounds really good. I'd recommend you try them out, they're quite steller.

charlie brown
"Best Overdrive" is subjective...for any player, or amp. Go out, and try a bunch, all brands, and see which one (or ones) you like, best! That's half the fun, in buying a new pedal, anyway. Also, if you have humbucker AND Single coil equipped guitars (LP & Strat, for example) take them BOTH! Pedals sound different, with each type. chipwich
I've been playing a Boss Blues Driver BD-2 lately, because it seems to scale well over different guitars and volume levels. It's extremely easy to dial in just the right amount of OD. What do you use/like ? If you are looking for true overdrive not distortion, I would highly recommend the Ecstasy Drive from Wampler. After I got mine I got ride of 4 other dirtboxes. It's incredibly transparent and very versatile. This is unique, not like any other OD I have ever played. Here's a demo worth checking out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXTQYraLnV8&feature=player_embedded#!
tweed2
I bought a WhizzerMods TS7 / 808 with Thick Tube Mod pedal directly from the maker. Excellent pedal. Modded Tubescreamer with some extra zotz. The amazing discovery was how, at half settings, my Ric 12 string sounded with it. The "thick tube" moniker is fitting. Handles single coil, humbucker and toaster pickups. Nice, warm overdrive. Best usable OD pedal I've found under $100, and I went through quite a few. Hungrycat
A lot of people swear by the Boss Blues Driver. And there's about a bajillion different mods available for them so you can tweak them to your heart's content.
