Canadian Gibson update

bs

Recommended Posts

Just played a new Gibson DSR at Apple Music in Portland. It's a rosewood dread from the Garrison shop that Gibson purchased a while back. Much improvement in both tone and playability from when they first came out under the Gibson label. I'm told that they're now being made much closer to Bozeman specs.

The tag said $1189, on sale under $1K (can't remember if it was $989 or $949). Add about $200 for electronics. I'd say it's a pretty decent value at that price. Right now it's the leading contender for when I get the $$$ for a backup guitar.

I recently played a Hog cutaway dreadnought from the Canadian series, great electrics, great tone and lovely feel, and a killer price too. I would be very tempted to pull the trigger if I was in the Market for another guitar. I was very pleasantly surprised. Under £800 too which is not to be sniffed at for a pro quality bat in the uk.

Unfortunately I was distracted by the amazing Hog J100 in the same shop...that guitar really had something special going on.

I believe there is a big difference between a Canadian worker making a Gibson and an American worker making one. Regardless of similarities in technique, tools and raw materials - the Bozeman guitars will almost certainly remain superior.

I remember when I lived in Michigan. It was the first time I had ever seen Flag Day in the United States. It was around 1990, and I walked along the quiet residential streets of Rochester and looked at beautiful homes that were impeccably clean with freshly mowed lawns and these beautiful flags - many quite large - hanging from the homes and flag poles. I had a sense of absolute awe at the great disparity between an American sense of national pride and the pathetic excuse for patriotism most of us Canadians emit.

I walked along these streets taking pictures of the homes, flags and the people interacting with one another. I walked to a local park and saw a band, watched the people and really enjoyed a feeling of pride that was evident in everything around me.

American guitars are the best guitars in the world. This will probably never change. When an American works on a Gibson or a Martin, I believe that person does so with an understanding that these fine instruments represent everything that is good about American ideals. I believe these instruments are made with tremendous pride and this factor - perhaps above all others - will keep foreign made Gibsons in the back seat forever.

I am a proud Canadian, but I do not believe the Garrison people have the talent, drive, skill or interest - and will never have the pride - to make a Gibson I would want to own. I further believe that marketing Canadian Gibsons for $1000 can potentially undermine the value of the brand.

I owned some older Guild guitars that were US made. When the new Chinese Guild guitars hit the market, and where the Chinese instruments are such good quality, my US made Guilds really took a value plunge. If Gibson insists on making acoustics in Newfoundland, I really hope they see fit to rebrand the instruments in a way that will separate them from the real thing.

Gillian Girl:

The love boat awaits your arrival for a cruise to an idyllic south pacific isle where we can hear the natives softly chanting this message to you in the moon light "it's not the man in your life that counts-it's the life in your man"

Regards,

Gilliangirl // what kinda guitar are you looking for if you dont mind me asking?

I'm looking for a lower-priced 'second' guitar (well, third really) that I can keep in alternate tunings. The poor old Seagull is ailing and can't do the job atm. I figure if I'm going to sink money into the Seagull, I might as well sink money into another guitar. Don't have a lot of $$ right now tho' and our dollar, as you know, is sinking fast!

I keep thinking to myself, why didn't I buy more stuff when the dollar was better#-o ?

I played a few Epiphones at L&M here in Calgary, and they were pretty good. That's probably what I'll end up doing. And L&M has that *in-house financing* thing. Gotta love it!
