dango Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I have a gibson 12 string serial No. #887997 (1968 - 1970) it is playing OK & it is a nice guitar Im torn between having work done for the raising saddle & warping sound board (top) or just leaving it alone. It is costly for extensive repairs but if I do nothing its days are numbered.I paid $225 in the early 1980's & gibson said $550 - $3500 for repairs. Mabey some guitars should live a natural life without intervention ? I'm going to try re hydrating to buy some time. Who knows it could out last me ?

What model 12-string is it?
pfox14 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Do yourself a favor and don't send it to Gibson to be repaired. The cost extimate is ridiculous. Take it to a good reputable luthier in your neck of the woods and have them work some magic on it. Sometimes it doesn't take as much as you might think to get an older guitar back into a good playable condition.
ksdaddy Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Hydrate. It could make a huge difference. Always take the least intrusive method first.
dango Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Yea, I'm still trying to figure out the model but I wanted to start out with a minimum - maximum quote from gibson & it was just a description from me. I just recently got a GS mini from taylor as a road guitar & it came with a lot of info on guitar humidity. I have a early 90's J-185 a ES-330 & the 12 string & im in the process of re-hydrating them all. I never was aware of it till now. So I'll keep you posted on how the 12 string progresses ?.
DanvillRob Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Yea, I'm still trying to figure out the model Possible to post a photo?
j45nick Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I keep all my gibsons in a gun safe with fenders & a national resophonic at about 45%-50% humidity. Don't let your guitars get into an argument with your guns. The guitar always loses.
DanvillRob Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Don't let your guitars get into an argument with your guns. The guitar always loses. Makes me think of the movie "The Red Violin"!!
dango Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Well here goes the JPG its # 887997 looks like a dreadnought style
DanvillRob Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Could it be this: RARE VINTAGE GIBSON 12 String JUBILEE - This guitar was made by Gibson as an Anniversary Edition 1969-1970. It was available from 1969-1970. It is 14-1/2" wide with a body similar to a square shouldered dreadnought but smaller, laminated mahogany back and sides, rosewood saddle, unbound rosewood fingerboard, 24 2/4†scale, and GIBSON logo. The playability is great with that warm Gibson tone that you just can't find in other guitars. The guitar comes with a nice (not Original) Hard-case and will be shipped to highest winning bidder at actual cost to deliver to address. You just cant find guitars like this anymore... Buy it today while you can. Great for collector of fine Vintage Gibson Guitars. I reserve the right to end the auction early as the guitar is for sale locally. 1. Case is NOT an original Gibson case.. 2. Serial #887934. 3. Width of neck at nut is 1-and-7/8''. 4. Height of strings at 12th fret is 3/8''.
DanvillRob Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Maybe a little better photo: These, (and the 6-string version), were built to celibrate Gibson's Diamond Jubilee in 1969-1970. My Jubilee is SN: 886088, (6-sting version).

DanvillRob Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Yikes! That case seems a wee bit large in the body. Yeah.... see #1.... maybe it should read, Case does not FIT this guitar!
zombywoof Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 The recommendation to hydrate the guitar be a good one. If that does not work and if you are talking about the top bellying up below the soundhole you might look into installing a bridge doctor. They make two versions with one requiring doing nothing natsy to the guitar to install it (which, of course, is the more expensive of the two).
dango Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 Yes ! That is my guitar and with serial No.# 887997 it could have been made the same day. does yours have any saddle movement ?
DanvillRob Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Yes ! That is my guitar and with serial No.# 887997 it could have been made the same day. does yours have any saddle movement ? Mine isn't a 12-String..... and it looks like it's been through a war....in fact...it HAS! Headstock broken off about 25 years ago by Amtrac, has at least three prominent cracks in the top. Alwasy reminded me of Willie Nelson's "Trigger". However, I'll tell ya, it plays like a dream and sounds wonderful. It's my "go to" guitar, and I'll take it anywhere.
dango Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 Well my 12 string is already looking better. I took off the strings & put a humidifier in the body although taking off the strings probably has a lot to do with it. the string tension could pull the saddle back up once I re-string it ? That six string looks cool. Ive played my 12 string with 6 strings but it sounds much better with 12. it could be the tension that brings out the tone. How much did you have in mind for that 12 string ?
dango Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 I checked into the Jubilee & their is also the Jubilee deluxe. I haven't found any photos if it though.
DanvillRob Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I checked into the Jubilee & their is also the Jubilee deluxe. I haven't found any photos if it though. I think they're the same guitar. I know my old Dove is labled "Dove Custom", although there is nothing "Custom" about it! I'd pay upwards of $1K for a Jubilee 12-string in good condition, but if I were to spring for big bucks, I'd REALLY like a H'Bird 12-string!

[/b] I've heard of the Hummingbird 12, but have never seen one in the flesh. That must be a rare 'bird indeed. Are they vintage, or modern? Are they built differently to take the extra string tension, which is the perpetual problem with any 12-string?

dango Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 OK, so my gibson 12 string appears to be the Jubilee & it seems to be hydrating fine. once it is finished mabey I should use guitar polish to keep the moisture in & it may even add some ? oil the fret board ? sounds good. Should I wait before stringing it (seems like it may need to "cure" in its new position ? what about string gauge. I love the elixirs on my GS mini (an awesome guitar for the money by the way). Any body have an idea on string gauge ? no heavy gauge obviously.
