Just wondering ?

Have to admit while I love the the current logo that they have been using since the 50's I think, I dont really like the old, prewar one much, but I know there are many that do.

There are actually a number of different variations on both the script and block logos. Some Gibsons look better with the block logo, and some with the script. On guitars whose design and history pre-date about 1949, the script logo ties them to those earlier times, and is more in keeping with the design. On more "modern" designs--the Hummingbird or the ES 335 would be examples--the block logo is more in keeping, and looks better to my eye.

I've got Gibsons with both types, and love them all.

My favorite is the pearl, script logo, "The Gibson," as on my 1931L-2:

My second favorite is the wartime gold script with Banner, as on my 1943 SJ:

I have always favoured the block letter logo.

This, I suppose, is because when I first became aware

of the Gibson brand, 40 years ago, this was the log.

Likewise, with the Martin logo.

I detest the raised gold foil logo from 1995 to the present.

This to me was a dramatic change, and I am surprised it has survived.

The Gibson logo, script or block, has been done in pearl, gold transfer and paint.

Each one looks great!

I agree with John. I love the pearl inlay "The Gibson". My 2nd favorite is the 1930s script logo. Love to see that on the reissues, makes them look more authentic.

I would have to say that my favorite is the '47/'48 era large slanted script logo, but as has been said above, it would not look right on an LP, SG or 335, etc.

I do wish my L-5 had that script logo though. All I'd have to do to get that is to mortgage the house and buy a 1948 L-5P. I guess I should play the lottery.

Of my five Gibsons, even the logos on the three with the "modern" block logo are different from each other.

Larry,

I'm assuming you mean this logo:

but in a fancier L-5 configuration (but with slightly thicker script than this):

It is my favorite, if I had to choose.

Yes, that's the one.

How cool would this headstock look with the script? Especially considering the Imperial tuner buttons, flower pot inlay, and wide white border "Custom" TRC. Anybody got any Photoshop skills?

Jt....the script logo on my '23 L-2 is it for me, it is at an angle instead of straight across like the photo you posted, it's in abalone...If I ever get a custom Gibby made, I think I will have a "Snakehead" headstock with "the Gibson" script...that is it for me!

So when you finally come across that '48 L5-P, and need to sell one of your other L-5's with that disgusting modern logo, talk to me...... [biggrin]

I agree with those who say it depends on the guitar. I think they're doing it right for the most part.

Now if they could just get those pickguards right on the J-45s...
