What am I missing here?

Wow. I'd sure like to find out about this myself since I was about to spend the $ for one of those THD Hotplates. You know how they say if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. You get what you pay for. Although for $20.00 it may be worth a gamble. :)

This is how somebody explained it to me:

HERE'S THE CATCH:

It's NOT an attenuator!!! It's just a pot that GOES IN THE LOOP!!! You can build it yourself for almost nothing.

A power attenuator goes in between the amp SPEAKER OUT and the cab, NOT in the loop. An attenuator provides a constant load to the output transformer, while ablating the electrical energy to the cab. The THD unit turns the extra current into light, heat, and motion. It continuously and variably lights up, heats up, and spins a fan.

There is a LOT MORE voltage at the speaker out, than there is in the signal path; IT'S AMPLIFIED......that's why instrument cables and speaker cables are soooo different.

This thing has been on ebay forever and it's just a scam that they advertise it as an "attenuator" or "power soak".

It works, but then why don't you just turn down your guitar volume real low? SAME EXACT THING, just a volume pot in the signal path!!

Or you guys running rack stuff through the loop, just turn down the output signal real low, instant attenuator, right??

NOT!!!
