specialCF Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Any help would be very much appreciated! I have the chance to purchase this J45 the seller states is a 2008 or 2009 model. I have little/no experience with acoustics so I thought I would turn to this forum for help. A couple of things do not seem consistent with 2000's J-45, mainly the fretboard binding and 3 truss rod screw holes. The quality looks great and the case is real for sure (black/blue interior), any opinions would be greatly appreciated! Does this look good? (images attached)
Buc McMaster Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Looks all wrong to my eye. T-Rod cover is 3-screw, no serial number on back of the headstock, body shape looks wrong, pickgurad looks like it's from a Guild. This ain't Gibson.
j45nick Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Sorry, but that looks like a very nice fake Gibson to me. Any more photos? You were smart to pick up on the TRC. There's a whole bunch of things that aren't right for a J-45.

Buc McMaster Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 It's not allowing me to upload any more, any ideas? Don't need anymore photos to know this is not a Gibson. If you like it for what it is by all means buy it, but it's not a Gibson-built guitar and should not be advertised nor sold as such.
j45nick Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 It's not allowing me to upload any more, any ideas? Go to the "forum feedback" section here. The first post tells you how to post photos using photobucket, which is what most people here use. The guitar is clearly a fake. If you want a bit of an education, post the photos and we will go through the problems with it step-by-step. If you want to buy a Gibson acoustic in the future, it can be a good education. How much is he asking for this guitar?
JuanCarlosVejar Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 not a gibson !. no made in USA stamp on the back . the guard is not a J 45 guard. even the label looks weird! 3 hole truss rod cover edit : and the tuners look like those that martin uses
specialCF Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Ok guys this is the skinny: It looks like the seller listed it wrong its a 2009 gibson songmaker dreadnought mahogany not a j45. Finally found some info and looks like it checks out. A ltd edition for canadian market, 3 screw holes no serial. No pickups. Anyone have info on this model?
JuanCarlosVejar Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 it coincides with this one :) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FppaqaILY5Y

Well there is such a thing as a Songmaker, and this one looks pretty similar.....but I can't see Gibson building anything without a serial number. Kinda weird. All the ones I've seen photos of have a bound neck and gold hardware, but it could be, as you say, something done for a specific market.
ponty Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Come on Gibson folks... you remember these guitars? They came after the take over of Garrison. Made in Canada, and sell cheaply-although when I played one it was excellent. The orange label looks dodgy though. The printing is off the lines, the model is J-?? and it says Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA!! Like this one
ponty Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 PS...The guitar in question is Rosewood not Hog.

j45nick Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 This model is outside my experience, but the Kalamazoo label, if that's what it is, makes no sense at all on a modern guitar.
slimt Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Its Not a Gibson, Its a Fake... Label or No label...... and Garrison Guitars are aweful....
ponty Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 This is definitely a Canadian made Gibson DSM. There is nothing about it that is similar to a Garrison, only that it was made in the former Garrison factory. Approx value $ 400-500.

Well, Buying a Canadian Made so called Gibson is like buying a Chinese Gibson.. I live in Canada... and wouldnt put a dime on one.. Garrison had a great idea making the Inner structure out of Plastic... But just about all I seen Made and hanging in stores... They looked like skeletons.. I thought Gibson Bought them out.. For reasons unknown.. I could be wrong on this info...
onewilyfool Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 These Canadian made Gibsons are all solid wood, but the neck is not made from one piece, it has spliced heel and neck...Fit and finish is as good or better than the USA made Gibsons, but they just did not have the Gibson sound. In the end of the run, our local Gibson store was almost giving them away. They sell locally on Craigslist for around $400. I wouldn't touch one with a 10" Ukelele.....
slimt Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 If its Not Made in the U.S.A ... its Not a Gibson... Plain and Simple... No different than Martin.. Fender has Mexico, Japan, Korea building there guitars.. Its really hard to tell what your Buying.. Thats Why I stopped buying there inflated priced guitars.. Gretsch Sold out.. I wouldnt touch a Overseas Built Guitar... Ovation was innovative... Plastic Bowl Back...a sound of all there own, and Nice at that..... Now a Overseas Product ( AkA Celebrity ) .. Larrivee was good when they were in Canada... But to save and make a Buck.. they moved down South.. there Guitars look and sound like overseas Guitars Now..
