spike286 Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I have played Gibson Les Paul's for years among other guitars and favor them most of all. I recently bought a Yamaha sg and found that it is a very well made guitar with some Les Paul like qualities. That said i still like my Les Paul's best of all but find myself playing this Yamaha sg all most as much. I'm curious what opinion others have on Les Paul vs. Yamaha sg?

pippy Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Carlos Santana, of course, changed from LPs to an SG2000 (or two) so he can probably be included in a reply to your question. I found the Yamaha SG's to be fantastic players guitars when they first appeared and I see no reason to alter that view today. A very good mate had one of the less ostentatious ones (in dark cherry) and it simply oozed class. Stylish split-triangle inlays and high quality abalone edge binding. People at the time said they were, soundwise, 'a bit characterless' in comparison with the competition but (imho) that's just prejudiced bollocks. They could really sing. Quality-wise they were head-and-shoulders above the latter-day Norlins from what I could see. My only dislike was the brass block thing. Very nice guitars, all things considered. (But I happen to prefer LPs) P.
Kimbabig Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Chris Poland uses them and he's the world's greatest guitarist. I've played one and I felt it was a really great guitar.
This_Dying_Soul Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 This is my SG I owned one exactly like that 15 years ago. Great guitar and I miss it, but can't afford to buy another right now.
alexri Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Very cool man. Seems more like an LP in disguise though :)

Yamaha SG's are great sounding guitars, but are also kinda heavy ... good for studio work. The last one I played weighed nearly 11 pounds. Not really an LP copy as much as an interpretation. Pricing for clean original SG's is surprisingly low.

The high end models were said to out-Les Paul a Les Paul. Mine was not the high end, but still on the upper end of the mid-priced range. I would have to say it was comparable to a Gibson.
