Perhaps Roots is better terminology, although I've come to accept Americana as the descriptive term. As far as useless and meaningless, I consider that applicable to hip hop/rap. And I'm fairly sure when in their infancy people coined the phrases 'Rock and Roll', 'hard rock', 'folk', 'country', 'soul', 'punk', 'heavy metal' etc. there were those who verbally rebelled in similar fashion...
