Tiny Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hi all, I'm a longtime Taylor player who recently fell out of love with the Taylor sound. From listening to bands and musicians I like, I decided to look into an SJ, AJ, J-45 or similar. Soooooo, after playing a few at GC, I stepped off the diving board, sold my old Taylor 410 and swapped a 70's Tele player for a 2010 J-45 that someone was offering on another forum, straight-up. I've had it for almost a month now, got it set up to my liking, and am so happy with it -- it's definitely got a bit more of a neck than the Taylor but MAN! The sound is exactly what I hoped for -- midrangy, punchy, and musical. And I've found the under-saddle pickup much better than I expected. Here's a (low-quality) photo. Great forum, folks -- I've learned a ton already!
Buc McMaster Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Welcome to the forum! And welcome to the dark side......may the force be with you and your new 45!
j45nick Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Welcome. You'll find a lot of lively discussion on this forum. You will also find that the J-45 gets a lot of love here, as well. And for good reason.
Jinder Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Welcome in, Tiny! Great choice of guitar. There's nothing a J45 can't do. Best all-rounder out there, in my book.
EuroAussie Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 You saw the light ... welcome ! Ill admit that before I sold my soul and re-discovered the Gibson tone I owned a Taylor too ...that feels like a different world now. Great burst on that J-45 btw, enjoy !
jdd707 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hey congrats on the new J45 .... Although a Gibson owner since 1977, I've recently rediscovered the J45 ... wonderful guitar and your's looks great. Welcome in and be prepared for some lively discussion and to learn a lot.
ThePretender Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Welcome and congratulations on the new J-45! Nothing like a Gibson sunburst to get you started. I traded/sold all but one of my Taylors to get into the world of Gibson.
BigKahune Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 . Welcome. Looks like a beauty. Congrats on your new J45. . B) .
Tiny Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Thanks, all. I'm looking forward to settling in with this one!
E-minor7 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hello Tiny - Hope you'll have a good time here. Know you will with the 45, , , an ideal place to start. And what's your thoughts on that pick guard position. . . .
Tiny Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Hello Tiny - Hope you'll have a good time here. Know you will with the 45, , , an ideal place to start. And what's your thoughts on that pick guard position. . . . Thanks! It's funny -- as someone who is just learning the vintage specs, my reaction when I saw the pickguard position was "huh, that's not where I would have put it, must be one of those vintage details that has been around forever." If it's not based on history, then I don't get why they do it this way. It doesn't seem to be the kind of thing where some are correct and some are sloppily attached; it seems like someone at the factory has decided that they wanted it to be this way. I'm in my honeymoon period right now, and I have rose (sunburst?) colored glasses on, so I just look at it as another quirk that gives the J-45 character. Maybe in a couple of years it will start bothering me, and I'll need to get out the dental floss and lighter fluid -- yikes!!! I've tinkered with guitars before, but never nice ones!
brannon67 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the J45 club. Beautiful guitar. So the J45 must have really grabbed you for you to sell your Taylor. I dont blame you. Great guitar.I know I love mine.
BluesKing777 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Welcome to the J45 club! Enjoy, and don't worry about the pickguard - these people may drive you crazy....play the covers off it! BluesKing777.
E-minor7 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Enjoy, and don't worry about the pickguard - Heard, and Tiny - you are not the only person here behind burst shades. I just polished mine. . . .
retrorod Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Welcome Tiny....into the light I have never played a Taylor that I liked (admit that I have not played many)! I think the Gibson sound, feel and looks is what has driven me since the early 70's (before I could afford one of my own). Since then I have owned and played many (electric and acoustic) and am definitely a die-hard fan. I don,t tolerate miss-placed pickguards well, though! I mean....the LOOK is the LOOK...IMHO..
brannon67 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I had a Taylor years ago. It just wasnt my cup of tea for some reason. The Gibson tone speaks to me, especially the J45 tone. I have nothing bad to say about Taylor, they are great guitars, and Bob is a great guy, but Taylors just dont do it for me tone wise. To each his own I guess.
Windwalker9000 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Great start the J-45 is a fine guitar and will carry the day with a sound that all can Hear and enjoy. Glad to have you on the board!!!
Guth Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new J-45. Don't let the ramblings about pickguards and such diminish your enjoyment of that Gibson. Regardless of pickguard placement and other similar matters, if you managed to find an example with "THE TONE" (as defined by yourself), then all of the other stuff takes a back seat anyway. I've owned my J-45 for a couple of years now and I never grow tired of how good it sounds.
gotomsdos Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 what's your thoughts on that pick guard position. . . . I wonder what's wrong with the J45's pickgaurd ?
brannon67 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I like the pickguard on the J45, just most need to be repositioned on the guitar. But, I love the pickguard on the AJ model, fire, that looks very cool.
