modoc_333
that was the original color! Les Paul himself approved it!

Homz
The original Les Paul was only with the P90 pickups it was made to compete with the Fender "Broadcaster" later renamed for copy right reason to "Telecaster". Even later the LP became the LP Standard, but by this time it had taken the more familure PAF (patent applied For) double humbucker look. And then there was Eric Claypton, Pete Townsend and Jimmy Page. They ressurected the then dead design and the beauty was reborn... and the rest is history... xchrisbobisx
thats pretty interesting. i have been looking at some pictures of the reissues. how come none of them have the gold headstocks? like where "gibson" is gold instead of pearl. SRV-Zeppelin
Goldtop was used because it looked good on the old black-and-white TV sets. Finishes like HCS (which didn't come around until 1958) didn't show up as well (but did show the wood grain which is why they became so popular.) Gibson decided to use a flat finish that would be appealing on a TV screen and Goldtop was an obvious choice. The LP junior used TV red and TV yellow instead.
