enchong
I just woke up and thought it might be a good idea to caress my baby so when I was playing, the phone rang(it was my wake up call) and when I was to return the handset, it hit the upper part of the front of the guitar!!! WAAAAAHHHAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! This created a dink on it!!! Any suggestions on how I can fix this or this will be a permanent mark on my guitar? I tried rubbing it with my dunlop cleaning cloth but would not take it out....tsk tsk tsk. Any help or consolation will be most appreciated. Thanks
GuitarGuy503
Is the finish chipped or just scratched? If it didn't break through the finish you may be able to have it buffed out. Unfortunately, a guitar thats played will never stay perfect. I have a few minor imperfections on my LP but still have yet to go through the first ding. I hear its alot easier to accept accidental damage after you've put your first ding in a guitar.
greatwhitenorth
Rotten luck man. I already have a little pick scratch on mine. Brings up the with or without the pickgaurd debate again. I hope that the damage can be buffed out. GWN
pippy
What a shame! If the wood is dented then I suspect nothing can easily be done to fix it. As mentioned in a previous reply if a guitar gets played it cannot stay perfect. One of the best things of a "Murphy Aged" Les Paul is you don't have to worry about that first blemish... tulsaslim
It ain't truly 'yours' until you've put that first ding in it. Now you can rest easy. The deed is done. It's officially 'broken in'.
RichCI
If the guitar is still pretty new, you can try using your thumb or a finger to rub out the ding. What happens is that you're generating heat that draws moisture and pushes up the ding but, if the guitar is older and the wood is pretty dry, it won't work. Be careful - that heat from friction builds up fast and can hurt!

Tim Plains
the phone rang(it was my wake up call) Get the hotel to pay for it! If you plan on playing this guitar things like this are bound to happen. If you want to keep it perfectly preserved, put it in a glass case and just look at it all day. LT ED
Ah that first ding......I took my wifes clear nail varnish and did a little test under the scrath plate to make sure there was no reaction with the nitro ,and there wasn,t so I took a very fine brush and just built up the damaged area and you would never see it unless I pointed it out. Couldn,t say the same thing when I turned around and hit the drummers simble with the head stock,no amount of clear nail varnish will get rid of that one. You will come to live with it . Rock n Roll, hello huston.
Wolff
Ouch! Well, at least your guitar is now personalized. Although I do hope you are able to repair it like the guys were explaining.

cajunman831
someone told me one time to use a wet towel with and iron.i tried it on a ding one time on one of my strats and it worked wet the towel .then plug iron in and heat the ding area and it should bring it out with the moisture of the water, then i use ghs guitar gloss to buffit out.it,a a mirror mild abrasive for guitars.what the prcess does is expand the wood out. whoobla
Hurts for sure, my new es 339 had a head stock scratch just recently, the 01 les paul standard took a hit too, recently. Rock that wood. It's your's . I like to call it character. Better than taking a hit like the girl friend throwing stuff at them.
SRV-Zeppelin
Who knows, maybe that ding will grow on you. you know, kind of a "battle scar" type thing? Who knows. Before you know it we may have pics of a "FrankenPaul" on the forum....

rocketman
Thanks Guys!!!!! I feel a lot better!! Its ready for war now thats its got battle scared.....have a gig next week and its ready for action!!! Best way to feel better.... this is a really good forum! Just for curiosity sake can you show us some pictures? I know these Les Paul dings hurt, but try having a chunk of wood fall off a very old and rare Steinway piano, which is what happened to mine when I had it moved. It hurt me a lot to see that wood on the floor. The piano got repaired, but no matter how good it looks I'll always know it's there. After a while I learned to live with it and now I don't think about it when I'm playing it anymore (I only think about it when people mention their own dings!). The same will probably happen with your LP. Good luck with your gig and enjoy that sweet LP sound...
retrosurfer1959
Well now youve accepted the damage that's the first step. The second step - come up with a much better story than smacking it with the phone during a wake up call. It's rock and roll so the story needs to have Playboy playmate twins a Harley and a bottle of Jack Daniel's as a starting point Unless the story is so stupid you have to tell the truth I stuck a brand new non reverse firebird into a ceiling fan on stage once I didn't even try a better story I mean a ceiling fan how lame was I. Lmao. Sorry, but that is funny as hell. Just like the bass player in my band. He whacked the hell out of his headstock on the low ceiling of our practice room. Cheers.
