does this look like a 60's les paul?

No... it looks more like a Norlin guitar from the '70s, to me. Is there a volute at the headstock? What's the serial number? It's virtually impossible to be definitive based on that one pic...

sorry,

I am no expert but I don't think a 60's les paul would have dot inlays? or 3 knobs?

Someone had one they just posted for sale for $400 claiming a 1960's les paul.

I think there is a fourth knob that you can't see in the picture. The Bartolini Hi-A pickups were made between '73 and '78, and were retrofitted (which would involve routing). The serial number you posted is consistent with 1968, which means it would have been made in Kalamazoo. It has been "f0cked over", so to speak, so it has no great vintage value, especially if the routing to accommodate the Hi-As is a mess.

What about the presence of a volute at the back of the headstock?

I did not get a good photo of the back from the guy....but by the looks of it the price of $400 doesn't seem like a steal.....

Sorry, I'm not even going to go there... not enough solid information to go on. If it is from that era, and plays worth a damn, it should be worth more than $400. Myself, I would not go near this one with a 10' pole - but I admit to being very conservative in this regard.

Have a nice weekend.

Thanks for the help....When I see a craigslist title "1960's gibson les paul made in usa $400....It gets my attention.

Gibson used 6 digit serial numbers in the '60's and '70's. In the '70's, the words "MADE IN USA" appears below the serial number. This instrument is most likely from 1974-1975. It does appear to have been modified.

I haven't seen an elongated toggle switch cover either.

I would drop no more than $400 on that if it played well and sounded good and was actually a Gibson. $400 for a used LP, even a modified one, is a good price. It is a "player" though, not one for the collection.
