grandmaster Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I was wondering if there is like a decal or something that can crate a binding effect on my headstock. Many thanks.
Gordy01 Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I've never seen anything specifically for that. I would imagine you could use some automotive pinstriping and get the effect.
taxman Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Yeah, it can be done quite nicely. Go to an auto part store and just buy 1/16th inch pin striping tape. Cheap as heck and you get a lot of it. Buy the color you like and just apply it to the edge of the headstock. If it isn't coming out right, you peel it off and start again. Lots of guys do it and the results really are impressive. I've done it to two axes of mine. In person it looks real nice.
jfine Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Taxman--that looks great! I never would have thought to use automotive striping tape. Good call! In 1970, I did a very stupid thing--I had my '67 Gibson SG Standard refinished, and one of the "custom" mods we did was to sand a bevel on the front edge of the headstock. The headstock front was black-painted holly, which is a light-colored, almost white wood, so that bevel made it look like it was bound. Of course, if your guitar doesn't have the holly veneer on the headstock, this won't work. I think the striping tape is a better idea.
johnfeeser Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Do you think that would work on the side of the fretboard/neck too?
denthevetteman78 Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Do you think that would work on the side of the fretboard/neck too? As i work in a sign company i use that kind of striping everyday and i know for sure that it will wear off after a while.
claydots Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Nice job on the headstock..... It wouldn't work as a fretboard binding, I was in the sign business for 30+ years and totally agree with the above statement.
