Info on odd Melody Maker

Just bought an old Gibson Melody Maker Double Cut, has the short horns and cherry finish and I thought it was a '64, but it has a volute neck...The SN was scratched out and it has been stamped SECOND in the back of the narrow head stock. It has the red brown transparent finish over good looking mahogany. It has been heavily modified, with the pick guard cut back and routed for 2 humbuckers, the tuners replaced with Schallers, and a TOM bridge and tailpiece installed. I am replacing a lot of this with a custom PG and different Gibson pickups. I will probably keep the TOM because of the holes left by removing the tailpiece. The body is dinged, but is all there and it's pretty good considering and the neck is very good or better. It will be a player for me.

I thought the volute did not come in till 1970 or so, by which time the DC Melody Makers were gone. ???

I will take it apart to clean it later this week and try to find any codes on the pots and maybe traces of the SN. Any thoughts on this? Pics later this week.

Thanks.

I think I may have found the answer. Gibson reissued the double cut Melody Maker with 2 pickups from 1977-1983. I am thinking they may have had the volute and that this is one of them.

added: it has MADE IN USA stamped under the remains of the SN, indicating '70's manufacture...Appears the SN was 8 digits, maybe starting with 6 or 8...

I am thinking this is one of the '77 double cut double pup re-issues, an original Joan Jett type guitar.
