LarryUK Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 This just released Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi fighting cancer Last Updated: 5:00PM GMT 09/01/2012 Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is to undergo treatment for cancer after being diagnosed with lymphoma. His bandmates - with whom he has recently been reunited to record a new album - have asked for fans to send ''positive vibes'' to the 63-year-old musician. The hard rock pioneers recently reformed with their original line-up to work on their first album together for 33 years. A statement released on behalf of the band said: ''Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan - the Iron Man of rock & roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.'' The group, widely credited with creating heavy metal, insist they will plough on with plans for the new album. Black Sabbath had also lined up a series of major dates during the year. Iommi and colleagues Ozzy Osbourne, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward announced last year that they were together again once more. They had been writing and recording in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin on an album due for release in the autumn. The statement said the group would continue to work on the recording: ''They will now go to the UK to continue to work with Tony. Further information will be released as it becomes available.'' Left-handed player Iommi famously lost the tips of two fingers working in a sheet metal factory as a teenager but learned to play with thimble-like devices to extend them. The Birmingham-based band, renowned for their powerful riffs, made their debut as Black Sabbath in 1969 and continue to be cited as a major influence on successive generations of rock bands. Wild-living Osbourne was axed from the line-up in 1979 and replaced by Ronnie James Dio who died of cancer in 2010. Black Sabbath had been due to play the UK's Download Festival this summer.
LarryUK Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Got it off the 'Times' site. What a Shame when things are going good for them.
sneakerpimp Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 i'm not a man of faith... but today i will pray for him and his family.
charlie brown Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Sorry, to hear this! However, they have some pretty amazing treatments, these days, and...if they caught it "in time," he has an excellent chance, for a full recovery. We'll all hope for the best! CB
LPguitarman Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Best wishes to Tony for a speedy and full recovery, hopefully cancer free.
DanvillRob Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 This make me sad. I will pray for this man. Considerin' he's a member of "Black Sabbath"...be careful to whom you pray!
ShredAstaire Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 My dad was recently diagnosed with the same...if they caught it early like my pops, he should be fine. Treatments are going well....side effects thus far have been fatigue and light nausea... I'm sending my good vibes to Tony!
Harpo Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 This just released Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi fighting cancer He's got my prayers!
BT Bob Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 I wish him well. Master Of Reality was the first LP I ever bought, God knows how long ago!!
Twiz Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 I'm f$&@ing tired of cancer killing/trying to kill my heroes. I did some reading on lymphoma. Luckily, it sounds like they caught it early, and there's a good chance he'll be ok. He's the Iron Man. Get better Tony!!!
dem00n Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 will we ever find a cure for the big C? :( One day...but its going to be a long journey.
pippy Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 He will certainly get my best wishes as well. 'Paranoid' and 'Iron Man' were two of the first things I ever played so to me it seems like his influence has been around for as long as I can remember. Hopefully the speedy diagnosis will allow a full recovery in time. P.
bonzoboy Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 That bloody disease has taken so many from us and still keeps on taking people indiscriminately. My podiatrist just a couple of weeks ago gave me a video of Black Sabbath in concert in France just after they had released their first album, the video is top quality in audio and video quality.MY thoughts and prayers are certainly with Tony he has overcome so many obstacles to get where he is today-this is the last thing he needs.
Buxom Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Such a shame. I hope he makes it. I don't want the world to lose another amazing player.
lagerfanny Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Deeply saddened to have read about this yesterday. Here's sending positive thoughts & vibes to the great man. Really hope that he makes a full and complete recovery A.S.A.P. You have given the music world so much and deserve so much better than this.
saturn Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 i'm not a man of faith... but today i will pray for him and his family. I'm not either. But it does seem kinda strange to pray for a guy who founded a band called Black Sabbath BTW, I'm a big fan and wish him the best. Last night at band practice, my drummer was just telling me how good Tony's newly released autobiography is. Get well Tony!
CodeMonk Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I was floored when I heard the news. Tony has been a MAJOR influence on my playing. Especially last year when my Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath CD was stuck in the player in my truck for 2 months :) Get well Tony.
DanvillRob Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Especially last year when my Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath CD was stuck in the player in my truck for 2 months :) Like it was demon possessed?
daveinspain Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.... Prayers and good vibes will be going out for Toni...
sneakerpimp Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I'm not either. But it does seem kinda strange to pray for a guy who founded a band called Black Sabbath oh? then as a fan you know their lyrics have nothing to do with what you think you are referring to. i NEVER pray, but i did last night... *that* is strange.
