Sancho Panza Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I stand corrected; I think that Kalb is good, very good, almost on the Bloomfield level. His work on Projections is mind-blowing, life-changing and has actually given me a reason to get up in the morning. Why isn't his name mentioned in all these "greatest guitarist" lists? WHY? Even though I love the Monterey Pop version, I think that this version is absolutely great; the tone! I don't know if he played on that goldtop on the album, read somewhere that he played a Danelectro. Anyways; love his tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLKouiOa0pQ
Sancho Panza Posted January 10, 2012 Author Posted January 10, 2012 who? You just killed a part of me ..

DogsPart2 Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 No argument here, Kalb is great. "Two Trains Running" from the AL Kooper "Soul of a Man" live release is incredible. Kooper certainly knows great guitar players, having recorded with Kalb, Bloomfield, Stills and more recently Jimmy Vivino.
EVOL! Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 He is pretty killer. Sort of a Mike Bloomfield hybrid with his use of modes. Love his guitar tone too. I still have my old man's copy of Projections. Need to bust it out again and play it LOUDLY.

I don't know how to post you tube video's but if they have the Soul Of A Man video or the studio version of "Two Trains Running", I highly recommend them. Craig
slavestate Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 I have a couple of their LP's on vinyl. I was in a record store and saw a few of their LP's for sale for cheap so I took a chance on them. I think for what they are it's pretty rad. In regards to his guitar tone, for sure it's a solid one. I have Projections and Planned Obsolescence along with plenty of others for sale at my Discogs page. Thank you for sharing!
Sancho Panza Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 "Two Trains Running" is one of his best work! Though I really have a soft spot for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3vnXBsDT50
raymeedc Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 When I was a kid (back in the '60s), the Blues Project were a local band that made it (to a degree). Danny Kalb was an early influence. At one point (shortly after Kalb had split from the group), he started giving guitar lessons. I took one of these memorable private lessons. He had no idea how to go about teaching, & so wound up showing me a couple of riffs to practice, sending me on my way with a live, killer acoustic version of Two Trains Running that he recorded with his J-200 (while I sat mouth agape trying, probably in vain at 17, to act as cool as I could) on to a section of tape that I later spliced onto another reel..... wish I still had that tape.
