milod Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 CB.... Naaaah.... <grin> I liked these better. Hmmmm. Mebbe 'cuz I played 'em "in the day." EDIT: I always thought their version of "I'm a Man" was way too fast - but that's just me mebbe. m http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSix9tDVbro&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH1HZJsAOI0&feature=related
charlie brown Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Yeah, I played those, too...as well as the one's I submitted, previously. In fact, we did "I'm a Man," and "Over, Under, Sideways, Down," at this past NYE gig. Didn't sound to bad, for not even rehearsing them...it was just an off the cuff, kind of thing. I've always liked "Mister You're A Better Man, Than I," and "Evil Hearted You," as well. But then, I like most of The (original) Yardbirds songs, anyway. Ironically, I heard The Yardbirds "I'm a Man," first...then Bo Diddley's original, and Muddy Waters' version (Mannish Boy), later. So, I was "used to," the faster version, and not the more traditional one, at a much slower tempo. Consequently, I like/appreciate it, both ways. CB
pippy Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH1HZJsAOI0&feature=related That was an interesting clip, Milo... Clapton (who hated the musical direction the Yardbirds were heading) left on the same day as the single was released and I was curious to see who was taking his place on lead. At first I didn't recognise Jeff Beck as he was on the Guild 12-string! It was original member Chris Dreja on 6-string duty there. Incidentally Pt 1; That's one of my daughter's favourite tracks. Incidentally Pt 2; In CB's first clip Beck has his (now-famous) Esquire but it has a white 'guard. The only snap of him I have from those days shows it with it's original black guard. Anyone here know how it looks now? It's part of Seymour Duncan's collection I believe. Incidentally Pt. 3; Two of those Yardbirds tracks, 'For Your Love' and 'Heart Full of Soul', were written by future 10CC man Graham Gouldman! As Michael Caine once said; "Not a lot of people know that...." lol! P.
Versatile Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Excellent and knowledgeable posts It's good to see The Yardbirds featured... So much history started right there.... V
EVOL! Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Great stuff from you both. I am just dang happy since I am finally in a project/band that does Layla. This is a pretty dang good version although its played fairly fast; hold one its off to the races.... Do you get all coked up and layer three guitars, all playing different parts, when you do it? j/k - that is what I think of when I hear the Derrek and the Dominoes album version. Don't you?
