Rock and Reel Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I hate to see you go but I love watching you leave! I'm sure this has been visited before but I'd like to see some nice backs! I love backs and sides of fancy, exotic tone woods. Wether is Rosewood, Maple, Koa or Korina, each one is unique. Here's my dove....let's see some more!

modoc_333 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 2005 J-100 Xtra with quilted bubinga back and sides. enjoy!
Rock and Reel Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 There is nothing more striking than highly finished exotic wood. It's almost a shame that these gorgeous "backsides" are relegated to the bottom of a case, back against the wall or worst of all buttons and buckles. Though tonally it falls in between Rosewood and Mahogany, for shear beauty my favorite is Koa. Here are the backs of my Martin D-45K and Taylor K20ce.
j45nick Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 She's a plain-Jane back: no exotic wood, fancy grain, or visual spectacle. But the lovely, straght-grain Honduras mahogany back of my 1948 J-45 shows just where the famous Gibson 'hog tone comes from. More than 60 years of honest wear and tear here, with just one loving owner--if not always a very thoughtful one--for the last 45 years.

j45nick Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 the back of my j45 is almost black , how come yours has lovely grain showing ? is that a burst guitar or a blonde one ? This is a 'burst guitar. In normal light indoors, the back looks darker than this. This is photographed using the camera flash which brightens up the color and makes the grain pattern more clear. Notice how things in the background of the photo are washed out. It is not, however, as dark as the near-opaque stain I have seen both on some "new" J-45's and some vintage ones. On the 'burst J-45's, at least from the late 40's-late 50's, there is usually a fairly dark stain on all the mahogany. Most of the J-50's (natural J-45) I have looked at from this period are "all-natural"--no stain on the mahogany--and look more like the J-50 back in the earlier post in this thread. Remember, too, that mahogany varies a lot in color, even within the same species. What isn't obvious from the photo is that there is a moderate amount of lacquer checking and a couple of cleated cracks, plus the usual dings associated with more than 60 years of living. The camera can lie, even when it doesn't intend to.
retrorod Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Oh well, since we are hot on the "hog trail".... An old pic of my '70-'72 J-100...Natural top,, Sorry about the 'flash'... Some "awesome" 'back shots' from all....
jchabalk Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 There are some beautiful guitars here! Here are the back and (1) side of my 2008 SJ-200 Koa
DanvillRob Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I can't believe how beautiful the backs of all these guitars are! When I was looking for an 'upscale' guitar, I considered a SJ-200 mainly because I DO love the looks of the back & sides! However, I was afraid the SJ would be too big for me, and I gravitated towards the DIF....when I found mine, I knew it was just what I was looking for! And of course the 'Bird's back:
