I have one of the 1997 "300" but don't think I'll be picking up one of these three editions. (signed/aged, aged, or VOS). You can pick up a used 1974 CSB LP Custom for around $2.5k and it will be closer to the real deal. I appreciate that Gibson recreated the guitar as it is today, but when I think back to that killer CSB of Ace's I don't picture that chunk taken out of the top. I don't think they should have recreated it as it looks today, but as it looked in '77.

Here'a a quote from "acefrehleylespaul.com":

"14Dec11 - THEY'RE HERE !!!!!!!! The new Ace Frehley Budokan Les Paul Custom has officially been announced with an expected release/now available date of 18Jan12. That said, I know you can pre-order the guitars already at most major retail guitar shops, across North America !!!

Ace was in Nashville on Monday, 12Dec11, at Gibson's Custom Shop to sign and play the first 50 guitars (Aged/Signed).

* Due to the anticpiated high demand for these models, the first guitars in North America will be sold via lottery. *"

By the way, what number of the 300 do you have, and have you registered it there?

"The 300" search continues, particularly ones between ACE 064 and ACE 101 !!!!

Not exactly on topic admittedly but I've only just come across this whole '300' thing, was reading about the pick-up discrepancy on acefrehleylespaul.com, amazing, I had no idea what happened in 96/97, must admit. Do any of the 300 models come up for sale on the bay or elsewhere? And how do they sound?

I have #113. It has one of the sickest flame tops I've ever seen on any guitar. It has three Dimarzio PAFs and sounds amazing. The flame is so heavy it ripples across the top - you can actually feel the flame through the finish.

Ace and Gibson knocked heads over pickups. Gibson was insisting on their own models and Ace was insisting on Dimarzio, not necessarily Super Distortions. The Custom Shop didn't like the three Super Distortion idea because the guitar's tone would be limited to the bridge pickup. The earliest ads for the Custom Shop guitars say "three Dimarzio pickups" without getting too specific. His Custom Shop guitars with PAFs will get you his studio sound running into a classic tube Marshall / 4x12 while those with Super Distortions in the bridge will get you close to his live tone. Neither pickup is a discrepancy as long as the guitar is left as it left the factory, but I would be on the lookout for someone who started swapping pickups around if you want to retain value. Anyway, the less expensive production model by GIbson and all of the far less expensive Epiphone Ace models have Super Distortions if you really want that combination.

Now, to the pics and clips!

and here's a link to my sloppy, too fast version of "I Stole Your Love" with the Ace guitar. This is the tone!

Here's Ace with his #1 that he used extensively live. It's loaded with three PAFs.

Yes, they occassionally turn up on Ebay. There is one there now in fact.

Yes, my Ace is registered on that site. There is a lot of good info there, particularly regarding Ace's guitars from the past.

The aged/signed ones are way overpriced and why should you buy a guitar like that with just the bridge PU working.

I'm an Ace fan and own a production signature one build in 2000. Have it for 10 years now, it's my only guitar but never let me down - not even after playing two gigs in a row [smile]

Anyway, I think the Budokan signature will become more of a collectors item rather than to be played on...

Agreed. Hey, you can buy a real1974 Sunburst Les Paul Custom for around $2,500 and it would be very close to Ace's after you add a middle pickup (that you don't even have to hook up!)
