Reilly81 Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I picked up an L-6S Deluxe and noticed something with the pup positioning that I want to know if others have experienced or not. Never had the L-6S with the rotary put may be similar on those. In adjusting the pup height I noticed that the 3 height screws give you a different variation than the normal two. I found I got a bit more pronounced "chicken pluck" when adjusted so the two inner pup sides, bottom of the neck and top of the bridge, were raised and the outer sides, top of neck and bottom of bridge, were lower. The extra adjustments available via the tri-adjust system seems to offer some additional nuances beyond the regular HB adjusts. Or have I been cleaning my ears with too many 1/4" plugs....
buliwyf Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I cant answer this even though I have a 1978 L-6s and I dont have any reason to do an adjustment to the pickups mine sound good at the moment. Is your L-6 a new one or a vintage one, there is a difference in the way the 6 way is set up.This wikapedia page has some info on it but I dont know if it can answer your question,if not just set the PU's to your preferance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_L6-S Heres an answer to the same question from 2009 hope one of these helps. http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/pickups/8322-pickup-height-its-effects-tone-2.html
Reilly81 Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Mine is a 1976 without the rotary but all original. I play with the pup adjustments on some of my guitars because of the interaction. For example, on a G&L G 200 the neck pup is best lowered flush to the surface while the bridge is up. I generally set them so the mid position has an equal volume from both but let the volume stay constant if I go from the neck straight to the bridge. The L6 is the first with three adjustments I've had so I'm exploring. Mostly play Gibsons at this point, ranging from an early 1970's LP Deluxe to a mid 1990's NightHawk. Hope at some point to have an L6 S with the rotary, as I've heard it's a different set up than the Gibs with the Varitone circuit.
