charlie brown Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 My band, does (primarily) "Classic Rock & Blues/Blues Rock" How about your's? CB
Voodoo Monkey Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I mostly play blues and classic rock but have no band :(
ZuWa Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Blues, blues and more blues. And then a few bluesy originals. Then throw in a classic rock tune, then more blues. The folks seem to dig it!
charlie brown Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Ooops, I meant to put this in the "Lounge" area...sorry! Duane, feel free to move it to the lounge, if needed. CB
charlie brown Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 I'm curious, as to what many/most bands play, in clubs, as...out here, in the "sticks," it seems to be mostly either "Country/Red Dirt" or "Classic Rock." Curious too, as most of the club/bar attendees, are much younger, than our "Geezer" band, and I've been vocalizing the need for us to play more "current" music, along with our beloved "Classic Rock/Blues" stuff. Do you all find that you need too, or there's a demand for, more current fare? The age group in the clubs and bars, seems to be those who grew up in the 90's, as opposed to the '60's and 70's. I'm not saying they don't like, or appreciate "Classic Rock," but that maybe they're just not as vocal, about what they would (rather) hear, possibly?! Not sure, how that effects bookings, IF at all? CB
charlie brown Posted January 16, 2012 Author Posted January 16, 2012 This brand new project is not really classic music, nor is it all rock its a decent mixture of current tunes and tunes from the past. Probably, a wise decision/direction. CB
njdeadhead Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 We play improvisational music, mostly by The Grateful Dead and The Allman Bros. In a typical 40 song gig I find that I have to throw the younger crowd a few bones and play some Sublime, Pearl Jam, Amy Winehouse, etc. We really enjoy playing long and experimental jams, but we also realize the need to occasionally play more current tunes to keep the interest of non jam-band fans.
charlie brown Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 njdeadhead...Are you in a larger city, or a more rural area? CB
njdeadhead Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 njdeadhead...Are you in a larger city, or a more rural area? CB I'm in a very heavily populated area with a pretty decent music scene. I play in Pt. Pleasant and Asbury Park NJ (where Bruce Springsteen is from). Good tourist crowd in the summers, pretty cool locals in the off season. Where are you from?

From a "wide spot, in the road," out in the "Sticks," in Kansas! Closest city (Wichita) is a 2-hour drive! So, "live" music is very rare, and "limited!" I grew up here, but lived (due to work), in So Cal/Los Angeles, for 30 years! CB
codename Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Back in the day when I was in a band, 96-03 we played about 60 percent new mainstream rock and 40 percent classic rock. Our drummer is still playing and their band plays about the same thing. It still gets the best paying gigs in our city of about 85,000. Country with a bit of classic rock does well also .
LP4Me Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 My band plays mostly 90's...not a lot of bands in the area focus on this genre, so it goes over pretty well. We also play a few 80's songs, and some more modern stuff too.....we actually did a "punk" version of 'Bad Romance' by Lady Gaga and it goes over very well. We're located about 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh, PA....more rural suburbs......the music scene here is.....well......difficult. Seems that a lot of people prefer DJ's and Rap/R&B music to live music, but there are still a few nice places that have live music regularly. We're going to continue to try to rock-up modern dance songs, but it's not easy....it's a lot more work than learning a cover song straight up. Many of these "popular" songs don't lend themselves that well to a rock band. I hate to think that the days of the bar band are numbered, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better out there......the "classic rock" and "90's" crowd appreciates live music, but the younger people generally seem to have little appreciation for it.....
