WHAT KIND OF SPEAKERS ARE IN YOUR CABS?

Recommended Posts

I've been buying speakers, cabs etc, to get my sound where i want it. And not just for the bedroom, but for on stage sound.

So I was wondering what my fellow forum members are using and what kind of sound you're getting?

Speakers are very often overlooked, and you may have the very best head on the market, but if you have junk speakers the sound

isn't going to be what it could.............

Here's my setup"

I'm running a Crate GX1200H 120 watt head with a Crate 4x12" cab (yes, I know......but I only gave $45 for the head and $79 for the cab with the 2 Gold Backs in it) with two Marshall (Celestion) Gold Back series 100 watters and two Celestion G12H-100's (all 8-ohm) wired in series/parallel for a total 8-ohm load.

It has a really nice, deep bottom end, no harsh top end. very articulated sound on solos and heavy, full rhythm. A lot like EVH sound.

I play rock, hard rock, metal, some blues.

Also, if anyone is interested in info on the old Celestion Green backs (G12M, H) here's a link to a thread on the The Gear Page:

Celestion "Greenback" ID Thread

Has a BUNCH of information on the G12M and G12H series.

I'm a huge Weber fan. Other than the odd, old Jensen, they been my choice for 6 or 7 years now. The cabs that I currently use have a 10" AlNico Blue Pup (for the Vox tones) and a 12A125-O (think Jensen P12Q). Both are 16 ohm, connected to a rotary switch that allows me to play either one, or both at 8ohms. Ted Weber and I talked several times about the best way to accomplish this and the best speakers to use. He even gave me the rotary switches to experiment with. The amps I use are a Vox AC4 clone (old style, not the current AC4) and a Li'l Dawg Mutt (Tweed DeLuxe, with a Champ power section). So, the combinations available, between speaker and amp choices are many. My Ric 12 and Casino like the AC4/10" speaker combo for '60's stuff. The Mutt/12" shines with my Strat and Korina SG. But there are some fantastic tones available through both amps, with both speakers on, too. I've built 2 identical cabs, so that I can set up both amps and jump back and forth. Once the Weber speakers are broken in, they sing. If you like that old Jensen tone, Webers are the next best thing.

That's a cool idea! Haven't really thought about doing a rotary switch, but most cabs I've ever had were loaded with the same speakers.

What brand rotary is it? do you have a part number?

Well....that looks very nice!! Even the colors of the Rickenbacker and the Epi match to the walls color.

I'm currently running an Avatar 2x12 cab with the Vintage 30/G12H30 combo that I absolutely love. It's an open back cab that I am running my Tweaker 15H through that creates a monster tone. Combining the mids of the 30 with the bass response and highs of the G12H30 I am able to get a ton of great tones with a lot of different amps. Now, if you are going for a VERY specific tone (ie. Vox through blues) it's not the best way to go.

Weber sells them as a impedance selector for their amp kits, so it's kinda being used backwards (!?) The part number is WSW-R2x3. It's a matter of trial and error to figure out which terminal to mount to. Took me a half an hour. Simple really. Ted was amazed that no one had tried it before.

My Marshall 1960 B JCM800 cabinet is loaded with Celestion G-12-L-25s,the MG 4-12-A cabinet is loaded with Vietnamese made Celestions. My Vox 4-12 BN cabinet is loaded with 12" Wharfedale speakers designed by Steve Grinrod-the man who helped invent the Celestion Greenback and singlehandedly developed the famous Vox Bulldog speaker. My '66 Traynor Guitar Mate has a Celestion Vintage 30 that sounds absolutely stunning and my circa '66 Leslie model 16 cabinet has a single JBL K-120 that's just an absolute killer with the Leslie engaged. My old '68 Fender Bassman cab has 2-15" speakers but the decals on the back of the cones just say Fender which of course isn't the case as Fender contracted out its speaker construction but judging by the era of the cabinet and the fact that the speakers are most likely original they are quite probably Jenson or Oxford. Some day I'm going to get brave and take out the 3 or 4 doz. screws that are holding the back panel in place and check out the speaker maker by checking out the number code.

Just a point of interest for this speaker thread.

Speakers are manufacturer/date coded just like potentiometers. Somewhere engraved or stamped on the basket or magnet will be a six or seven digit code which tells you who made it and when.

The pretty foil labels with the fancy names can be very misleading.

Wow Tweed, I forgot about your amps. Really nice setup you have there.

BTW, I like LOUD speakers.

Thanks for the compliment. I guess that I'm getting old. Loud isn't doing it for me anymore. Both the amps in the picture would be considered low-watt, the Mutt being 12w and the Acey4 being 5w/2w. If I want to get louder, I'll break out the Supro 88t, a stunning 35 watts! Best amp ever, IMHO.

OK.......... own a variety of amps and cabs....And there's a variety of speakers in them....Weber speakers get very high marks....

Certain Celestions get high marks......On my list to get; Some ALNICO 12" Jensens, new; They're great for recording............

I'll third the Weber speakers. I have a 10F15T, 8F150, have had the Signature 10's and a 12F150. All were great for what they are. I'll also cast a vote for the Altec 417. Hard to find and expensive, but very nice and super efficient.

So how's those Carvin speakers? I've heard good and not so good about them.

And those EV's are bad-*ss! Have a friend that has a Carvin 100 watt combo with 2 of those and man does it sound good!

And I want to say thanks to everyone that has posted here! Gives me more to think about (not sure if that's good.....LOL) and try!

i don't have cabs....1-12 combos. But in those and in the cabs i had in the past i have use EV12L' for the last 20 years at least. Nothing else sounds/reacts/feels like them and nothing else works for me. but i am not a rock player. I'm an all around player that mainly plays rock but also blues, soft rock, country, etc. So therefore i'm not into that pumping 412 cab sound. I like that but i consider it more of a specialty sound than an all around sound. A 1-12 combo to me sounds all around, and an EV works best there because it doesn't require a sealed cab to be efficient. Anyway, thats just me, but you asked [biggrin]

I prefer sealed cabs, but, EVs are great in those as well................

It depends on which amp I am using. In the Hot Rod DeVille I use 4 10" Eminence Rajun' Cajuns.

In my old Bandmaster, I use 2 12" Celestion Red Label British Invasion GM-12's.

I have to agree that Weber makes a great speaker.
