Bluemoon
I think I have a ground issue with my LP standard that is causing my amp to hum/hiss. What do I need to check?
SRV-Zeppelin
Well, I have no idea. But you're not the only one with this problem... my amp constantly hums if anything's plugged into it (except my SG, for some strange reason...) What you could check is: Is the grounding wire (third prong) on the amp's power cable plugged in? Some people use two-pronged power bars that allow it to hang off the edge. Have you tried your amp in other rooms of your house/different buildings? This can tell you two things: 1) whether or not it is a grounding problem, and 2) if it is, which parts of your house have the issue. Other than that, I don't know... I'm no electrician. Good luck! Bluemoon
I think I've eliminated the amp as the source. It looks like it is my LP...but not 100% sure.
SRV-Zeppelin
In that case, it may not be grounding but a jack issue. Unscrew the plate on the back of the guitar over the jack and volume/tone pots and plug in a cord, ensuring that it makes contact with the metal in all places. In some cases you may just need to adjust the jack slightly.
MikeRom
Do you use a high gain setting? Sharing a curcuit with a noisey (electrically) device? Fans, ac units, etc ...[/quote'] I play in a finished basement with a TV, computer, etc. I moved the amp to a couple of different outlets in the basement, with little success. Tonight I will bring it upstairs to see if that makes a difference. I wasn't using a high-gain setting, though the hum does get worse when I do. porschemunkey
A tube in the amp going bad can sometimes cause a hum too as it picks up and amplifies the 60-cycle "waves" floating around it. Bad news if it's a power tube and it blows...

elessar820
Shielding the cavities killed pretty much every ground buzz in my BFG. I used aluminum tape and taped the ground wire to the side since you can't solder to it. Worked out great and very easy to do.
