Truss Rod Nut Size -- unexpectedly large???

Hi, first post here! Haven't even put together my sig yet, but I have 3 Gibsons (4 actually -- actually, 5, but the other two are in retirement until I get the time & $$$ & expertise to restore them, but that's another story...)

Anyway, I recently picked up a used 2010 SG Std 60's Neck, a GC exclusive with coil taps and BB1+3. Great guitar, though I have had to make a couple of adjustments (which I'm pretty used to and confident with as far as it goes...)

One thing that's puzzling me though: I want to loosen the truss rod ever so slightly -- the fretboard is REALLY straight, and could use just a hair of relief. Since this didn't come with the original case & candy, I thought I'd just pull out the truss rod tool that came with my '96 LP Special, which I still have. I open up the SG's truss rod cover, and to my surprise the tool is TOO SMALL for the SG.

WTF?

I think the tool I have is a standard 5/16". Shouldn't that be what's in this SG too? Any insight into why/what this might be?

I had this happen to one of my new SG the TR nut was a spec larger and the tool wood not fit, I returned the guitar and got another and the nut was fine, must be a bad batch of nuts.

Wow -- I wish, sort of, that I had that option.

This is too bad, the guitar overall is great and I figure I'm going to keep it, but this and the nut (which has a high E slot that's cut too close to the edge of the neck) is pretty lame. I don't have a ton of luthier tools, and not knowing what size wrench to try and get I'm either at the mercy of luck or I need to take it to a tech for a tweak. :P
