Malchik
Yes. They are using American grown rosewood and they are using Indian rosewood again. To get around the domestic processing law, they are using thinner pieces of rosewood and laminating them together. By doing this, they are getting around the 6mm limit. Thinner pieces means they can classify the rosewood as a veneer, and thus, they have to classify the rosewood as being processed in India, which is the requirement set for importing. Gary Moore Tribute
I was under the impression that the 2012 versions of sg standards, lp traditionals, etc, weren't going to have rw fretboards? They are and the aren't in the mix of boards for this year are: Baked Maple, Obeche, Richlite & Granadillo Rosewood on the 2012 models appears at least to be more exclusive and only on the £2K+ guitars probably because of the additional costs. PS. Regarding Rosewood Veneered fretboards has anyone got one? and if so got any pics?
pfox14
While Gibson has been using alternative materials like "baked maple" for fingerboards, they continue to use RW and abony as well. I don't think they ever stopped using it.
Rus
They never officially stopped using it. They had a pallet taken from the warehouse, yet they are still receiving shipments of rosewood and ebony... I put in an order for a one-off from the Custom Shop, and they could not fill it because they do not have any ebony fingerboards. My dealer is checking back with them every week. stein
The question, might be will the rosewood be going back to Gibson.

My dealer is checking back with them every week. Most of the new customs on eBay right now have maple necks, so their ebony supply may be hampered at the moment. I'd still love a maple custom. Gary Moore Tribute
I think they already have they don't want to use imported wood, but who knows where they get it. I also heard something about baked maple. I haven't learned much about it yet such as how it is and the sound compared to other types of fretboards. Has this changed again?

One submitted In Nov 11 and the other in Dec 11, so yes they are doing one offs again

akadave
They never officially stopped using it. They had a pallet taken from the warehouse, yet they are still receiving shipments of rosewood and ebony. Its the Chicken Little's who have caused this Sky is fallen mentality causing this thing to go south more than it needs to do. No where have they been denied from purchasing Rosewood or Ebony woods, its business almost as usual except now its verified wood purchases and correctly filled out paperwork. I will give them a huge Thumbs up since they are using this to try different woods on their guitars. None of the new SG Standards I have seen have rosewood fretboards...just that horrid baked maple. Im not keen on the laminate either. Things are worse for guitar builders all the time. Thanks left wing activist bureaucrats!

Things are worse for guitar builders all the time. Thanks left wing activist bureaucrats! The SG Standard is currently listed as having a Katalox fretboard on Gibson's web site. Katalox is very similar to ebony except for its color which is closer to rosewood. http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-USA/SG-Standard.aspx

Murph
It looks like ebony is now off the menu. And to think, my cheap old '79 "The SG" has an ebony board. Ah, the good old days.......
