Correct Tuners on AJ?

I have an AJ that I mentioned in another thread that I bought at the Orlando show last week. Great guitar but I noticed yesterday something about the tuners.....they have the vintage butter bean buttons but the gears are sealed Kluson-type instead of open-backed like almost all others I have seen of this style. According to the serial number, the guitar was made in 2001. Any insight into this apparent discrepancy?

Nick, since you said you had played this guitar at the show, did you notice the tuners?

Thanks.

I didn't pay any attention to the tuners, to tell the truth. It's usually the last thing I look at, even on vintage instruments, since they are easy to swap out if you don't like them or they are incorrect for the instrument. The only AJ currently listed by Gibson (Scruggs model) has open-back tuners with metal butterbeans, I believe, sort of like the old Grover style. I personally love the look of open backs: I like seeing the guts of the tuner.

Thanks for the reply, nick, it really isn't that big a deal with me either. I guess it's just because I had never seen that configuration before. Must be I'm too used to seeing Martins with the butterbeans and open backs.

My '02 has the chrome close-back Kluson butterbeans. Lovely looking machineheads and work a treat! If one dies (I am always retuning as I use a lot of non-standard tunings, and tend to kill machineheads after a few years) I'll replace them with Waverlies.
