It can be overwhelming when you're starting something new and see how far behind the curve you are. I will turn 55 this summer and have only been playing for a year or so. I practice regularly, do my homework, and look to this forum daily for inspiration. I think what slowed me down was the request for photos and was embarrassed that I didn't know how to post them. I appreciate the good advice I have received here and have tried to follow it. Thank you. So - I have an iPhone - how do I post pics from phone to this forum? Welcome aboard. It's generally the case that you never see them again after they get what they want... In my opinion this site is not a PAID Customer Service department for people looking for free valuations to sell a guitar.... But hey,...that's just my opinion. Well, actually, it IS a paid service from the Gibson CS department. It is Gibson that puts the money up to run this forum as part of their web site. It is a service to those who want to use it, and those who wish to do so for free on Gibson's dime. So, I don't know that I would think it is really fair to be harsh, or run off those who come here just for info or advice. The moderaters are not paid, and do so for free. Those who contribute, also do so for free. Much of the good that happens here are from those donating their time and effort. EVERYONE deserves a little thanks for contributing. I don't know where that puts us as far an being obligated to anything. I don't think that any individual should feel obligated to help another. Most of the time they are very thin-skinned to the humor and heckling that they may recieve on their initial posts and 'drop out'. Or....they get the info that they are in search of and then 'drop-out'..! I say....WhatUPWitDat..?? I guess I am guilty of the same thing. Once, I joined the John Deere Forum after getting a new JD lawn tractor. I posted a couple times.....ain,t been back since. I just proved my own point....SOooooo, I will shut-up now. I am addicted to the Gibson Forums and will never leave until they pry my cold fingers off the neck of my CF100E.... Thanks Rod - nice thread - I also know a guy that specialises in prying cold fingers... The trouble with Newbies is they're.....uhhhmm, aaaahhh....NEW! BluesKing777. It generally takes me a bit to get to that point though. While I don't want to insult anybody but how many times can you look at questions like what guitar should I buy when you just want to scream what the heck are you asking us for - go out and play a bunch. Others like The Gear Page just get too friggin' big. I just am not interested enough to sit there and read 150 posts regarding Van Halen's latest song. AGAIN-Willingly Helpful! Jokes about questions are common and fun, makes me wish we were in a room together so the conversation could go as they do. Stein posted a good thought about the younger generation maybe seeming rude. (or something to that effect). I think forums are kinda like email, once you click the send button, you can't change it and getting expression across in an email/forum is really difficult. I'm guilty of being thin skinned when I 1st joined this forum. Felt like I was being put aside, like everyone was in a click and I was the outsider. Which I guess is correct. I came back to guitar after setting it down for a decade or so where a lot of you here are playing gigs and/or professional players (it seems). It's a little intimidating when I just don't have the knowledge as you'all. So I try to learn and stay with it. Newbies posting stuff about grampas guitar I agree with you. But, being new in any club or whatever is a bit nervous and when you take hits in the beginning or are ignored, I think that's what makes newbies leave and not reply. As I said I came back to guitar after a decade or so of leaving it sleeping in it's case and joined this forum to get re-inspired and meet people with the same interest as myself. I'd like to ask everyone to take it easy on the FNG and give 'um a brake....at first anyway. Also, thank you for all the advise and information you been willing to share with me and others. You are clearly confusing MARKETING with CUSTOMER SERVICE Stein.... Many brands create Forums like this as they are a very cheap and easy form of Marketing. The only real costs associated with the Forum are the cost of servers to host the Forum. You could very quickly set up a Forum like this for a couple of hundred bucks a year. The software used here is a cheap and basic Forum format. The goal for Gibson with the Forum is to create an on-line community for people to talk about and discuss the brand and the various products Gibson sell. Getting people talking about a brand is good Marketing... The Customer Service department however is the in-house department within Gibson which handles Customer Comlaints, Customer questions,issues. etc on Gibson products. Again, nothing to do with this Forum...It would be Corporate suicide for any brand to have non-employed and non trained forum members, who the brand have no control over, provide Customer Service to potential Gibson customers. MOD's are never paid on Forum and they always contribute for free. Except maybe for the Gibson "planted company spies" on this site!!!! :lol: and we all know who they are... No one is disputing that a lot of good happens here. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience in the members (..and a lot of great people here to!!!) For me the purpose of Retrorod's original thread was in highlighting the annoying "Instant gratification culture" we live in today. People always want instant answers to everything. I personally believe that they should be polite and follow a protocal if they want to tap into the vast wealth of knowledge of our members... but hey, that's just me!!! If members want to answer these Newbie "How much is it Worth" questions then that is their right to do so. Every forum is different (I only belong to three) and it takes some time to get a feel for the climate of each. The key to being a newbie anywhere is to show respect to those who have been around for a while and to try to actually contribute something when you post. (Not that I won't most likely eventually rankle someone here or get called out on a stupid remark). Cheers! Tiny Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 As an honest-to-goodness noob (anyone with 200 posts claiming to be a noob is a NOOB POSEUR ), I have to say that this is about the friendliest forum I've come across. I came here as a new J-45 owner about a month ago, looking for people share my enthusiasm for Gibson acoustics, to learn more about these guitars, and to talk about music. On my first post, someone remarked that this forum moves a bit slower than some other forums. I have found that to be true, and it is one of my favorite things about the forum -- whereas on some other sites I have missed 100 threads if I miss a day, I can keep up with this site pretty well. There is a staggering wealth of knowledge and talent on this site, but it's just a bit smaller a group, and that makes it possible to interact with folks in a way that is hard to do on an enormous forum (like TDPRI, which I used to frequent). I had never been a member of any forum previously and still this is the only forum I participate in and am a member of. As I started to follow the threads here I was amazed at the amount of knowledge and experience of the members. I was waiting on a replacement guitar and became more and more interested in the forum and Gibson in general. This led me to other sites and research... and I discovered the Gibson bashing that is prevalent in some parts of the web. I was shocked at some of the things I was reading and became worried that I had made a bad decision. This led me to post a thread here that caused me some 'heat'..... which I may be still on probation from in some members eyes. Anyway, the heat caused me to stop posting for quite a while. But I hung around and stuck it out... and I am really happy i did. The amount i have learned about guitars from you guys is in my honest opinion is truly invaluable. So cheers. And the help i received from Gibson and JM on getting a replacement HB TV would not have been available any other way. ( I had contacted Europe and US customer service ). I see other ppl being helped in this way here also.... so I feel it provides a service in some respects also) I have watched a few noobs come and go even in my short amount of time here. One in-particular who posted a thread concerning how to protect the design on PG's. She received quite a lot of negative pretty useless replies... and she has never been back. I feel this is a shame as she could have had a lot to offer the forum. ( She stated shed had been playing for over 40 years and had quite a few high end guitars if I remember correctly) All in all though I find this to be a very friendly and lively place, and I really enjoy being here. I think, as a whole it is GOOD to consider first impressions going both ways. It is easy to run a noob off, and it seems that those that would make the worst members would be the hardest to run off. So, if we want a good forum, we should be mindful of how we treat a noob. Those that would be the best members are also likely to be the first to leave should they get hassle from us. And, just like it takes a little effort to find out about how any particular forum works, I think we should also give a noob a little slack coming on, cause we don't know where they been. I can say I am guilty of Joining forums to get fast info... and then think from that point if its worth staying or not.. pending on the type of replies recieved.. I know of a couple of forums where the members are so very arogant... and just plain A#@H%LES .. They know so much about Nothing when it comes down to it... they have a tendancy to mock the very ones that they support business wize.. to me there just plain Stupid.. as for my self , I do Not Know everything.. I even have to ask for info when its needed. .. But I do know somethings,,, So I could be of some help down the road.. Just had mail contact with my younger brother and for fun asked him if he remembered the sparkler between the teeth test. He answered yes and added that he remembered thinking it wasn't that hard while he was climbing. Brave little kid, , , he must have been 7-8-9 years old. Now what has it to do with Gibsons and Newbies, , , well think about it. . . . And btw. he was the man who got me back on the G-track with his millennium Sheryl Crow.
