Jesus built a ship to sing a song to

It sails the river and it sails the tide

Some of my friends don't know who they belong to

Some can't get a single thing to work inside

So take me down to your dance floor

And I won't mind the people

When they stare

Paint a different color

on your front door

And tomorrow,

we will still be there...

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,

Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,

The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,

Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,

Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,

With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,

Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

I spent a lot of time pondering this question, and found it impossible to come up with a single line, a single verse, a single song.

A staggering number of snippets by a Mr. Robert Zimmerman turned up on my list, however, including this one. Some singer/songwriters tell beautiful stories. Others sing wonderful poetry.

This one stands the test of time just fine.......

God is a concept, by which we measure our pain - JL

All of the lyrics in 'I Am The Walrus' and 'Glass Onion', come to think of it, almost all of Lennon's lyrics. A great poet, that one!(think he got it from Zimmerman)

Fingers callus from the plough, wrinkled weather beatin' brow

Streak of silver in the hair, mhm face of despair

A back that's bent from years of toil, thorns grow in the worn out soil

No one left to really care, nhm face of despair

If you should plough old fields like these, you'd plough up memories

Don't tell the young to mend their ways, you can't show them better days

Their better days are yet ahead, your better days have long been dead

Rest easy in your rocking chair, mhm and look at your September country

Face of despair

Shoulders weary from the load, life is rough as a gravel road

How much of it can you bear, mhm look at your September country face of despair

In the September of your years, eyes that hide a veil of tears

A look of longing always there, mhm face of despair------------by Johnny Cash

I have two I would like to share. The first is an oldCharles Wesley hymn of redemption the second is about a discouraged preacher,it would sound nice in a blues format.

Long my imprisoned spirit lay

Fast bound in sin and nature's night:

Thine eye diffused a quickening ray.

I woke, the dungeon flamed with light:

My chains fell off, my heart was fee:

I rose went forth, and followed Thee.

Amazing Love! How can it be

That Thou my God, shouldst die for me!

I traveled on a lonely road and no one seemed tocare.

The burden on my weary back had bowed me to despair;

I oft complained to Jesus how folks were treating me,

And then I heard Him say so tenderly,

"My feet were also weary, upon the Calvary road;

The cross became so heavy, I fell beneath the load,

Be faithful weary pilgrim the morning I can see,

Just lift your cross and follow close to me."

Here we go...the late great Richard Manuel:

If you find me in a gloom

Or catch me in a dream,

Inside my lonely room

There is no in-between.

Whispering pines,

Rising of the tide.

If only one star shines,

That's just enough to get inside.

I will wait until it all goes 'round with you in sight,

The lost are found.

Guess you have to hear the song with the haunting piano and voice. Hung himself in a Florida hotel room. Always a wierd dude. More wine, pronto!

Watch out where the Huskies go and don't you eat that yellow snow.

--Frank Zappa

Actually my favorite is:

I took month-long vacations in the stratosphere and you know it’s really hard to hold your breath.

--Bruce Springsteen

Oh yeah the yellow snow phrase [thumbup]

She'll look up in that weathered face that loves her's, line for line

To see that maiden shinning in his eyes

And laugh at how her mirror tells her lies.

Stan Rodgers "Lies"

Or how about

Does anyone know where the love of God goes

when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

What a great thread!

Here's one of my favorites:

It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die

Cause I don't know what's out there beyond the sky

It's been a long, a long time coming

But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will

Sam Cooke, "A Change is Gonna Come"

The summer had inhaled and held it's breath too long

The winter looked the same as it never had gone

and through an open window where no curtain hung

I saw you

I saw you

Coming back to me

Marty Balin Jefferson Airplane

Surrealistic Pillow

+ on the Sam Cooke too JT!

That was the first Jefferson Airplane song I learned (back when Surrealistic Pillow was a brand-new album!), and it's still a great one. Perfect San Francisco 60's feeling, recorder solo and all.
