VOS Custom Reissues

Hey all,

I was just wondering if all VOS reissues undergo aging processes. Some of the screws on my R8 VOS have a slight discoloring (type of bronze/rusty color). There are also some light blemishes on the PUP covers. In addition, the control pocket and knob covers are scratched but this may be due to showroom scars. However, the body/finish itself is perfect, which is why I am asking as from what I have seen guitars that are advertised as having gone through light aging processes include the body finish in addition to the odd rusty screw. In checking the Gibson write up on the R8 VOS there is no mention of the aging process.

I have no issue with my guitar I am just intrigued. Does anyone have any info about this?

Thanks

The hardware is generally aged and they appear to apply some kind of gunk to give it a mat finish.

The idea is to give it the appearance of a lightly played and well looked after old LP.

Although I think the HW aging is a nice touch, the problem with the non gloss finish, is you will buss spots when playing, creating gloss spots! The finish also appears to mark easily, so I decided to buff off the gunk.

When you polish off the gunk, its just like any other LP and looks fantastic.

Out of interest were the control and knob covers on your R8 scratched, as a part of this process? I suppose not if the process is focused on the hardware but I ask as the back of the body on my guitar is perfect apart from those covers.

I never noticed, but after a quick inspection (and play [biggrin] ) I can confirm they are covered in light scratched. Nothing substantial, but it looks like some one has polished the plastic with a wire brush!

Note sure it was necessary since the wood finish is blemish free, but not a big deal.

That is exactly how mine look

Thanks again Yaff

Don't the "Historic" Reissues come in "either" VOS, or Standard (Gloss/clean) finishes?

I've seen them, in stores, in both finishes. So, I just assumed (dangerous, as that is)

they could be ordered, in either finish, but that the "spec's" remained "historic." ???

Yes, I am of the same understanding as you CB. As far as I am aware, the only difference between the two being the top. If I am not mistaken, the VOS R9s should have a light flame typically correct of the first 1959 LPs, the gloss should have more flame. Regarding the R8's, the VOS models are period correct plain tops where as the gloss is flame, although the 58's didn't originally have flame as that was introduced with the 59's. I stand to be corrected though.

She's awesome Yaff! If you have other snaps, would love to see more of her!! [biggrin]

Very limited, as the day I picked her up and had the camera out, the weather was not too good:

When I have some time and its a bit warmer (don't like to expose her to the cold) will take some better picks in natural light.

What about yours?
