Meerkat12
Does anyone know the history behind the Gibson L-48 archtop model? I have one and I have never heard of this model. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
j45nick
The L-48 was Gibson's entry-level acoustic archtop from the end of WWII until about 1970. Google it, and I'm sure you find lots of info. There are always a lot of them for sale on ebay and other sites, as they made a lot of them.
pfox14
I believe the L-48 was introduced in 1949. It was a cheaper version of the L-50 which had been Gibson's previous entry-level archtop. The two models are very hard to tell apart sometimes. Most of the L-48s I've seen have a lighter burst top than the L-50 and some of the late 40s & 50s L-50s had wedge style inlays vs. dot necks on the L-48. The L-48 originally sold for $75.00 vs. $95 for the L-50 (1949 prices). I believe the basic construction of the two guitars is pretty much the same.
