Hi guys...I recently bought a epi SG then ordered a set of 500T and 496R still sealed because I mic'ed the epi HB's 8.4K dc in the neck pickup and the bridge 13.4K now I find the 500T is 14.3k so I have to ask what's the point of swapping them out for that little gain...?

I bought the SG for the different sound than my strats...

Can anyone be the voice of reason I seek...

up until about a year ago I let others do the work enlighten me Oh wise one...

I had a 500t (16k) in an Epi SG once...I thought it was a bit harsh and muddy sounding in that guitar.I mostly play metal/thrash. I have stock 490's in my Gibson SG Gothic and I'm starting to dig the lower output of the Alnico II, works well with a high gain amp. There is a possibility I might change the 490t for a 498t. It all comes down to personal taste. A lower output pickup will still sound good when overdriven.

I haven't converted you in your thread the other day have I? I'm a big fan of the 490R/T for doing just about anything.

Which Epi SG is it and what sort of a sound are you after from it? If your guitar has a bolt on neck I wouldn't recommend investing in Gibson pickups for it.

Best Epi SGs by far are the prophecy series with either the dirty fingers or the EMG pickups. They have some top hardware, are beautifully finished (better than PRS SE series) and their ebony 24-fret necks are to die for.

I don't know man... that might be a possibility. I did go to GC the other day and did a side by side comparison of a standard SG and my Gothic... the 498t in the standard was brighter and a little gainier, but was not as warm as the 490t. Both guitars went through a Valveking. It's hard to say which one I like better. I'll probably keep the 490t in the Gothic for a while.
