rocketman
"No one is totally original" this is true: but SRV was totally unoriginal. And cheesy as hell. Hey' date=' to each his own. We're expressing opinions on taste and style, right? [/quote'] The short answer to your question is yes....but! This overall argument is interesting, which is similar to my current life as a professor. I thought about the question of what makes a successful professor/researcher in my field for a long time. This is similar to the question of why is SRV great? After a while I realized it wasn't the number of publications or the amount of grant money. It's actually pretty simple to define, but difficult to do. Ones knows that he/she is successful when the people that they consider to be the giants in their field in turn respect them. This is exactly why SRV is great, original, not cheesy, etc.: SRV Tribute Album. I heard B.B. King mentioned a lot here. He's on this album because he respected SRV, just like the others on it. Murph
I always thought with SRV it was the tone. Murph.
deepblue
I always thought with SRV it was the tone. Exactly! Blues lick are blues licks. Mix em up, match em...do what you need to do. You only have so many to tinker with. Its his tone and his power and his ability to nail it!

Tone was a big component, but to me it was his natural gift and a combination of blazing riffs and feeling that made him special. Tone made his guitar sing that much more... kmartem
Muddy Waters crazy slide riffs,Little Hubert Sumlins finger picked bends.Lonnie Johnsons amazing runs ,BBsTrills,Buddy Guys absolutly nutty guitar on Stone Crazy(the whole album)Albert Collins tuning his guitar to F Minor and using a capo, allways sounding out of key yet allways making it work.Albert King tuning his guitar to God knows what and play the same three licks backwards and making it work,Eric Clapton taking a discontinued guitar that nobody wanted ,playing through a Marshall copy of a Fender Bassman, turning up to 10 and creating THE SOUND. That my young friends is the BLUES.........

The man was gifted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPHan19ldcI&feature=related Love the picking around 1:17. Also, it sounds like at 1:40 he quickly goes to the bridge pickup to give a brighter tone (sounds the same way on the studio version). Does anyone know if that's right? uiucjpo
SRV Overrated? To Quote Billy Madison: What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul
myspace.com/jessenoah
no reason to make it a personal thing, but i stand behind my opinion SRV is loved by many guitarists, i used to be one of them, why did i like him? because he could play behind his head, he had good tone, and he played blues that was near 10 years ago, now i get a stomache ache listening to the same licks over and over, the squeezing, the lack of creativity, besides his epic tone, i dont see the appeal, he was very talented, and god bless him for going through the pain of heavy strings, but musically, his songs are lame, his licks are too "forced" 2 pesos

I can't imagine where he'd be today if he were still alive. Check out SRV - Austin City Limits. Listen to his rhythm work at about 15:35. Also, note what B.B. King says about him.
