Teer
Ok, I'm asking all of you wise acoustic players what you use to clean and/or polish your acoustic. I recently bought the 60th anniversay J-185(ser no. 12141053) last year. I would like to keep this guitar in mint condition(as we all do). So I'm asking what products/brands of cleaners/waxes/polishs you would recommend? Should I just use polish? Wax? Cleaner? A guitar tech recommended Meguiar's cleaner wax. RIC recommends Turtle wax(50/50 water/wax mix) on their guitars. Again I ask, what do you use? Any and all respones would be greatly appreciated. I really want to baby this guitar!(as well as my other instruments) Thanks guys! Teer

j45nick
This works good virtuoso Yes, but only use the cleaner when a major finish restoration is called for. The polish works just fine for routine maintenance.
Scratch47
A good carnuba wax works great. I used Dunlop for a long time, then finally noticed (Duh) that it had silicone in it. Silicone + nitro: not good... I use the Stew Mac polish made for nitro finishes: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_supplies/Abrasives,_polishes,_buffers/Preservation_Polish.html
pfox14
I would NOT use any type of wax on my guitars. Just a good polish like Virtuoso

ryanfender
The Gibson pump polish is nice but I find it sometimes clouds the finish especially on older guitars. I have come to prefer Stewart McDonald's Preservation Polish.

dhanners623
This works great on my J-45. sboiir
I remember this topic brought up a few times in the past. Others will disagree with me, but I use Martins guitar polish. Have for years (17 years on my present guitar to be exact) and it keeps it real nice. But I also wipe my Gibson down after every use. Think that is the key when using any polish, wax or ???? Madman_Greg
Most polishes are essentially abrasives. So will wear down the finish in someway over time. There are some thoughts that just cleaning with a damp cloth is the best way. Then drying with a polishing cloth.
Nightspore68
I've been using Martin guitar polish, too, on both acoustic and electric guitars. It doesn't seem to do much, which I think is a good thing: better it does too little than too much (and damage the finish). I did pick up some Virtuoso and some Music Nomad all-in-one cleaner/polish/wax this weekend. The guitar techs at the local GC said they use Music Nomad. I tried the Virtuoso on small patches of my new Les Paul and it seemed to work well. There was a smudge on the back of the neck that the Virtuoso removed. I'll report back after I use them both some more, starting with the inexpensive guitars.

Blaster
Gerlitz is an excellent product also, pure Carnuba wax, a Loar collecter turned me on to it about 10 years ago.
Scotto
Kudos to the recommendations for Virtuoso. I bought some this weekend and the results were much better than anything I tried before. I am a believer.
j45nick
Kudos to the recommendations for Virtuoso. I bought some this weekend and the results were much better than anything I tried before. I am a believer. Those of us who are Virtuoso disciples would never mislead you. Bless you my son, and welcome to the growing congregation of baptised believers......... It can't raise the dead, but it can come shockingly close. My old L-7 is a perfect example of what the combination of the cleaner and the polish can do. This is NOT a combination for everyday use, however.
