darth_flanger
went up west a while ago with the missus, decided to have a look down denmark st "tin pan alley"...rubbish!, i blame online guitar shops i bought my first gibson LP standard on that street back in 1997...the good old days I heard somewhere all the stores are owned by the same dude, hard to believe that's true. Vintage and Rare guitars are sometimes pretty good. I've bought a few guitars around Denmark St, starting in '87. I still go there everytime I'm around Denmark street, but I'd sooner go to Digital Village in Romford or Peter Cooks.

Can't remember if I ever made it to any of their stores. '98? how much was a LP standard back then? I'm guessing about a grand?
darth_flanger
Fender System III Strat, mid-80s? I still have the guitar, box, handbk, etc. Great shop. That's fairly going back a bit, I bought my first guitar in the mid '80's. I bought an F-50 Mesa Boogie from them, like you still have the amp, the hand book and cardboard box. Yep good store for sure. Not a Gibson dealer any more though, which is a shame. I think Gibson screwed up a bit when they reduced the number of Gibbo dealerships in the UK, about five years back, although the price on 2nd hand Gibbo's went up a fair bit which was pretty good if you were selling/ trading. What was the score with the system III? Never heard of it.
Rabs
Yes I agree. They are total crapola now... I went up there a few years back to get a Marshall pedal for my amp and not one shop stocked it, which I was shocked at.. Also I did find for a while that they guys up there (some of them) had a bit of an attitude.. I also got my firsty Gibby up there in 1995 and it was at that time the best.. Now some of them dont even stock Fender, Gibson or Marshall... Then I found out about Digital Village and there was a store ten mins away from me.. and have never looked back, they are friendly, will offer you good deals and will price match (plus why go up west and face the crowds when I can just go local).. http://www.dv247.com/ It is a shame, but things change.. Personally I dont miss it any more after being so lucky to find such a great shop locally.. (plus theres still the Vintage shop and the one that sells like 70s guitars and oddments in Denmark street, they are still cool :) Ohh plus I dont think they are owned by one guy, but they do work together these days to try and survive. 69tele
prices and especially shipping are way over what any of the online stores offer, last year I bought an mxr pedal at denmark street on a whim and later I found out it was a tenner cheaper online :-(, i knew it was going to be dearer but 10 quid is a bit of a steal ! when i go to UK i've also used digital village the one at high barnet, as the their web and store prices are the same, also very good to order online from got my SG bass and ampeg amp from them as well as a squier CV instore. RaysEpiphone
I'll bet Guitar Center owns them all. They bought up one of our local store's, we have one's or two other local shop's left in this area, one owned by a good friend of mine. With Guitar Center's Greensboro, NC store only 20 miles from my home town I don't know if they will ever open one here but they have been buying up what they can here. Ive shopped there but I'd rather see my buddy's shop enlarged and stocked with more merchandise so I can buy my brands at his place.
