markm Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I am getting ready to buy a new SG. I have played a few, not sure which models. I really like the new Standard Limited (the one with the baked maple fretboard) I am only concerned about the neck size. One thing I know for sure is that I like smaller, thinner necks. Should I get the Standard Limited? Or do I need to look at otehrs to get the neck that I like? Oh and my budget is $1200.00 Thanks for the help!!
StijnV Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 With SG's it shouldn't be too difficult: Sg's mostly have a slim taper neck
jaygl Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Standard and standard limited have a "rounded" neck profile...aka: more like a 50's style fatter neck. 61 reissue has a "slim tapered" 60's style, and is probablly the one for you if you like thinner necks. With your budget you may want to look at the new "satin" 61 reissue, or settle on a standard with a thinner "rounded" neck. They are out there... I am getting ready to buy a new SG. markm Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Thank you for the replies. Looking at the 61 reissues. They are nice, but out of my price range of 1200.00; unless I am missing something. How can I order a Standard on-line and be asuer it as the slim neck I am after? I was planning on ordereing from Musicians Freiend. Thanks again
markm Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 How about the Specials? same deal with the necks? Is there a Special 61 reissue? Thanks
rockman82 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I remember playing a black SG standard a few years ago, and remembering it having sort of a slim neck. It felt wider and slimmer than my Epiphone SG's neck(which is like a baseball bat lol).
EVOL! Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 60s Tribute with P-90s has the slim neck. btw I would go used if your budget is tight. A ton of used SGs out there. Not sure where you live, but in Chicago's CraigsList SGs pop up all of the time. That's how I got my Classic.

If you want a 60's neck you could go with a silverburst or white sg from guitar center or musicans friend. i wanted a 60's neck and i went with a silverburst model. alot cheaper than a 60's reissue. also look for the cupons you could save over 100 bucks. but if the limited neck feels good to you i would buy that. link belowhttp://images.guitarcenter.com/products/optionLarge/Gibson/DV016_Jpg_Large_583403.001_silverburst_close_angle.jpg http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-SG-Standard-with-Coil-Splitting-Electric-Guitar-105474654-i1476657.gc

The guitar has to fit you, otherwise you're not likely to be happy with it. The Standard has the 50's style neck. You can check Gibson's web site, they have all their models listed along with the specifications like the neck style being used. http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG.aspx The maple fretboards are really nice, too. I have a LP with the new maple boards and it's great. Good luck with your search...

Thanks again I believe the new 61 reissue satin models will be on the market for around $1.5K. The trouble is to find them. None of the big stores have them yet. I agree those are a good option, but you would have to stretch your budget a little and be a bit patient until they hit the streets. Oh, and also you will need to like the matte type of finish. By the way, I was wondering if anyone would have pictures of SG ebony gloss and matte (satin) finish. The photos on the Gibson web site have been "embellished" by computer and they look almost identical. Thanks!
Stooge Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 SG Melody Maker is my choice. Great guitar, recently bought one. I'm really enjoying playing it - plug in and away you go. Although I still love my Special, which is my Roll's Royce.
Jeff-7 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 What Anaconda said, and there is nothing wrong with buying used. Saves you some scratch that you can throw at more gear.
DiamondJig Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 None of the USA SG's that say 60's neck and have the new neck joint are the same as the SG61RI. They may be a little slimmer than the standards but no way as thin as the RI. The smallest neck is the Angus Young SG, but it's not the same as the RI, I know this is out of your range, just say'n. If you want to go new I would save a little more for the new RI in satin or more for the RI. There are a few other that have that early 60's joint and neck, they where to be 50th anv models but a few are still being released, saw them at the NAMM, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Truck.
