Fender Supersonic amp... anyone tried them?

Hey guys... I went to the store yesterday and as there was nothing new I asked what tube amps they had... my guy tells me he has these Fender Supersonic amps (2x12 combo version and half stack version, both in both black and tweed versions). He tells me doesnt understand why I have never shown any interest in them or asked about them... he has had them there for more than 6 months... (they made him buy 10 of each and he still has half of them).

I have to note that they have the twin reverb in stock, the deville and deluxe two (top sellers)... but he says not many people even takes a look at the supersonics... and he says they are supposed to be the sh¡t...

At the point I'm a little skeptical (spelling?)... so I go ahead and plug an american fat strat in the tweed half stack (the difference with the 2x12 combo being it is a 4x12 half stack AND has no reverb).

The clean (says "vintage") channel has 2 settings (vibrolux and bassman)... both sound ok, but the AC30 and the twin reverb blow them away easily.

Now the dist channel (says "burn") is awesome... easily the best distorted sound I've heard in a fender amp... two gain stages that work fine... I was blown away by that thing...

I am thinking about getting one guys, you should try one and see for yourselves... at that price that amp can't be beaten.

Anyone has tried one or owns one? I didnt get to test it with a Gibson, but it sounded nice with the fat strat.

I actually recently tried one of these at my local guitar shop. I'm amp shopping and am a big fan of fender amps. I was playing a hot rod deluxe before I noticed the supersonic. So I plugged my les paul studio into it and I have to say I was really blown away. I liked the "bassman" setting on the clean channel a lot, but you're right; the burn channel is really where this amp shines. The two gain setup is really nice, you can get a lot of different sounds out of it. I played around with it for about an hour and have to say it's probably the best amp I've played in the price range.

I've tried it out and came close to buying it, but decided to go with a Line 6 Vetta II instead for various reasons (mainly because of all the great effects that come with it). However, I think for the price it's one of the best tube combos on the market. I actually like the vibrolux sound a lot. Check out http://www.fender.com/products/supersonic/ if you haven't already. The "percussion" dirty sound is incredible. I haven't played a twin reverb in years so I can't remember if I liked it's clean tones better. So, I'm probably not helping much, but I did at least try it out...

History lesson Thunder....

The Supersonic is Fender trying to revive the "PROSONIC" which has a sort of cult following.

The Prosonic was designed by Bruce Zinky. It has a clean channel and a cascading gain channel. But.......

It also has a GZ34 tube rectifier. And a few tricks ala Mesa Boogie.

It has a three way switch on the rear that will allow it to do.....

1; Class A tube rectifier. (30 watts w/ 2 6L6's)

2; Class A/B tube rectifier (50 watts w/2 6L6's)

3; Class A/B solid state rectifier (60 watts w/ 2 6L6's)

I have the combo and it has 2; 10 inch Celestions with the Fender Custom shop logo on them.

Zinky also designed the Tone Master, and was involved in Fenders comeback with the Vibrosonic, the Dual Pro, ect. Fender and Zinky had a falling out and some very Classic amps were lost in the shuffle.

I gigged with a guy that had a Supersonic for awhile, and brought my Prosonic for kicks (I use a Mesa Blue Angel mostly now) to a/b them. The Supersonic has it's place, but if you think you like it, try to find a Prosonic. It's the original "flamethrower"...

Best of luck.

Murph.

The Supersonic I tried @ Guitar Center was a 1x12 60 watt combo ! After 2-hrs . and 6 guitars (Les Paul , Strat , Ernie Ball Van Halen , Tele , Gibby 335 , and a Schecter S-1(with coil tap) , I was sold , and traded my Marshall 6100LM Anniversary head in on the best sounding , and most versatile amp I've ever owned ! There are 3-voicings , and with a jumper plugged in to the effects send/return loop jacks (each with their separate volume controls) , you end up with an extra boost (footswitchable) on eack voice , giving you 6-distinct TUBE sounds , without , any effects or BS . If you want that kind of Tube Sound Versatility , in a Box that will hold up to any Club Venue , buy the Supersonic ! No Dissapointments !!!!!!!!!!!

Really? I didnt know that either... I have been to the same store a couple of times since posting this thread, and have been playing on both the combo and stack versions, they sound amazing... wonder how they would sound through one of my cabs...

I am 75% positive I will buy one but dont know when, I have lots of things to sell right now and no room for either. Maybe I should let go of my VOX AC30 too... and keep a supersonic head with a 2x12 OAG cab.

Hey Thunder - a friend of mine had the combo verison of the Supersonic and later gave it up due to some issues... I believe he purchased b/c he liked my Mesa Boogie and wanted something similar without the price tag and got the Supersonic. Supersonic is no Mesa that is for sure but it sounded good... have you looked into a Mesa at all?

Hey Thunder... looks like you're finally letting go of your obsession with Vox amps... =D>

I haven't tried a Supersonic, but I really like Fender amps... the Twin Reverb and Ultimate Chorus are both kick-a$$ amps, but my personal favourite is the Princeton. only $1300, and that thing rocks! only one channel, of course, but if you play blues at all (which I do) it's pretty much the perfect studio amp.

Yes... I have a mesa 90/90 rack right now (not mine, I borrowed a couple of weeks ago and have to give it back in january), very good sound... the thing is, no one sells mesa boggies around here, so there's no such thing as warranty... that's why I most of the time preffer fender vox or marshall, plenty of places here to go for warranty issues.
