Have you ever bought a $4000 Gibson?

Gibson detractors often like to say things like "Gibson guitars are OK if you have $4000 to toss in the trash. " or "Why buy a $4000 Gibson when when it won't do anything my $300 LDT wont do?"

My question is are there really that many people out there paying $4000 for a Gibson? I'm not looking down on you if you have. I just want to know if I am the rarity. I have owned about a dozen Gibson guitars over the years and the most I have ever paid was just under $2000. Granted I'm a cheap SOB ... cheaper than most even. But does the average Gibson owner really spend $4000 on his guitars?

Not far off, but I also have an epi and a Chinese Dobro so I'm no snob, just liked it and could afford it. Clearly production models are generally far cheaper (had a 2002 LP standard once too) so I'd agree by far the majority cost a lot less.

I've payed in the upper three'$ and have no regrets.

It's a stunning guitar in every aspect.

But if you pay MSRP. You be a sukkah!

Are you talking 4000 dollar MSRP="List" price, or actual "selling" price?

If it's "list," then I'm guilty! If it's actual Selling price...NO WAY!

In fact, most (with a few exceptions) have been below a Grand! But, that

was decades ago, as well. IF I had to replace them, out of pocket, these

days...there's NO way!! And, as we all know...even "Selling"(AKA "Street")

prices, can vary widely! My dealer, routinely sells one model Gibson I'm

"lusting" for, at 1000 dollars LESS, than any of the Big Box stores, sell

it (or, at least List it as their selling price) for. So...???

I'm not talking about MSRP. No serous person every pays attention to MSRP.

I'm not talking about hypothetical either. I want to know what you have actually done.

I'm talking about actually laying down 4G's on the counter and going home with a new Gibson guitar.

I paid $1200 for a new LPC back in 1981, and have been called a "sucker", "fan-boy", and "dillusional" by some [biggrin]

I figure what 16 year old kid wasnt the above names..... Hell I still turn into a 12 year old when I walk into any music store..... Glad there's something out there that can still make me feel like a kid at heart. [thumbup]

I see...well, in that case, only if I was wealthy enough, to put down 4 Grand, or more,

as "chump change!" Then, maybe?! But, even so, it would have to be exceptional, in

every way!

"It's all d1ck!" (Attributed, to John Lennon)[biggrin]

Well, as far as what I actually paid for, a guitar...my "Lucille" is the most

expensive guitar, I've actually bought. And, at the time (11 years ago) it was well

below 2 grand, from my dealer...and, in fact, was 400 dollars less, than the

standard ES-335, at the time. So...it was a "no brainer," to me..to purchase it.

Most of my guitars are now "worth more"...in some cases amazingly so, than what I

actually bought them for, years (even decades) ago.

And, to be painfully honest, they're all worth a lot more, that I'm justified, as a

"player," in having! [tongue][crying] LOL

My answer (to date) is no, The only model I would shell out that much for would be an R4 custom.

54 black beauty.....Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm..................

In the UK we have not much choice in the matter...lol!

I have four LP's bought between 2004 and 2010 and (even although two are 1960 Classics [scared]) they still managed to total (at today's rates) $14,400; so, well, I'm sure you can all 'do the math'.

But as they are, incontestably, the best guitars I've ever played in my life they are, therefore (IMHO), worth it.

Somehow. [blink]........

EDIT : I've just checked an average 'on the street price' for a '59 fllame-top from the top three sellers in the UK and today it worked out at $6,880 + change.

It wasn't $4k, but I paid handsomely for this beauty in 2008- a minty 2007 1959 Reissue. I purchased it back when the MSRP was $5200 and street price was about $4500. It was a great deal at the time, right before the bottom dropped out of the used market and R7/R8s could be had for $1800 and R9s for $2600.

I am the guy that some people complain about- I'm not a musician. I don't play in a band. And I've never played a single gig. Obviously I have more money than sense. lolz

However, there used to be 2 very active posters on this board who asked me to jam with them. And on the first night, both of them admitted my R9 sounded better through a little Blues Jr than their Lesters did through an AC30 and Marshall DSL. While not sold on the price, both of them agreed there was something to the Historic. Of course, it doesn't hurt that despite being a bedroom rockstar, I actually CAN play. [biggrin] Or at least so I've been told. I personally think I suck, on a good day.

lol.

I like to think my tone is alright. But then again I know where the treble dial is. [tongue]

Last time I looked, there was still a clip of me trying Good Times Bad Times on youtube.

And then there's this thing.

Half a Custom.

I must say, I've seen that picture before, and each and every time I get the same groin injury. That thing is NICE.

I've had it for a few months now.

Mahogany cap and a coil tap.

It sounds great through the amp and blisters front of house!
